I was talking to a fellow 4WD Hilux owner the other day, and he says
he just leaves the front hubs locked all the time - even for suburban
and highway driving.

As far as I know, locking the front hubs just hooks the front wheels
up to the front diff. But being a Hilux, the front diff isn't
limited-slip.

So is this guy hurting his diff by doing this, or is he just
unnecessarily wearing away his front tyres? Or is he not even doing
that?

Excuse my ignorance.

won't hurt the diff or other parts
he will however lose a bit of engine power to push the diff, axles and
front drive shaft
the Hilux doesn't have much power to start with so saving any power
would be the aim
it will also make it use a bit more fuel

not to mention the extra noise and vibration(especially if the front
shaft has a bit of wear)

Apart from wear and tear, I find a slight fuel penalty when leaving the hubs
in on my 80. On road steering appears slightly "tighter". Getting out to
lock the hubs gives you time to ask yourself if you should really be there
:))
