To all those who claim all kinds of wonderful things from brand "X" or
brand "Y" fuel....
May I suggest you do a little maths.
Look at the publically available figures from the Commonwealth
Statistician
First lookup how many manufacturers (as in those that operate
refineries) of fuel (Diesel or Petrol) there are in Australia.
Now compare that with the number of Retail "brand" outlets there are....
Do you begin to see the problem yet?
At the very least there is a hellof a lot of "brand engineering" out
there.
Now, for a bit more fun on a slightly different topic, fuel quality:-
First have a look at how much of the fuel of your choice is
manufactured in Australia.
Secondly, now look to see how much is consumed.......
That's the second bit of maths...Something of a "shortfall" isn't there?
Now, ignoring petrol for the moment.
Look how much diesel is manufactured.
Now add the amount imported.
Next subtract the amount consumed....
Now isn't that an interesting, if unfortunately negative, figure?
Doubtless some of it is statistical error, wrong reporting etc, but the
enormous short fall (do the same maths on Petrol and the figure is much
closer, a sup rising result if the same error conditions exist and
therefore statistically improbable given the vast difference in the
overall amounts consumed) suggests that a horridly significant amount
of "diesel" is heating oil and paint thinners doesn't it...... Worth
some scumbag doing it doing because heating oil is taxed at a lower
rate and thinners not at all (at least in terms of fuel tax).
And most diesel owners will not notice it, unlike modern petrol engines
which play up merry hell on "blends".
The cost to your engine in the long term is pretty horrid.
Next time you fill up, ask your console attendant where the fuel came
from, you might get a surprisingly truthful answer.

Silly question then:
Why hasn't bio-diesel taken off in this country yet?
...costs involved in the inital set up?
...or isn't their a real saving in Bio over a long term?

You have to pay the same excise as mineral diesel.

Don't get North Queenslanders started on that one! Cane farmers going bust
everywhere.....

That assumes that refineries produce a uniform product for all customers.
They don't. Customer specifications can and do change the product produced.
Then, there is a further assumption that what comes out of the refinery is what
is sold to the public.
Again, untrue. "Brand" additives are often added in the bulk storage facilities
of petrol companies.

Maybe even later in the chain -- at least some decades ago.
I recall my father pointing out 50 years ago that the bulk tankers
simply pumped into the same on-shore storage in Cairns, for example,
and the "brands" were created by additives (if any) on the run to the
distributors/retail outlets.

this is still what happens
there is a common fuel facility
all trucks load from there, but the additives are added at the terminal
load point via an injector system
you put in a product code or company load number and the computer
activates the appropriate injector
Airports work on the same system, jet fuel is pumped from the refinery
to the huge underground storage tanks
and then they just use pump trucks that connect the hoses to the ground
and the plane and just pump the fuel into the plane
and just to point out, woollies use the same product code as
Caltex/IFS/SEQF/Liberty so their fuel is the same

Actually Tony
to get Heating oil these days you have to fill out a Fuel Excise
exemption form(the driver that is) the fuel must have a "Tracer" added,
the fuel terminal must keep records of how much heating/fuel oil they
have and have sold, this also applies to non blue kero.
I have carried this stuff and it's a worry because if I deliver it to
somewhere and used for fuel blending and is traced I get in the sh.t
just becuase I loaded it
of course the amount of diesel produced here is lower compared to the
amount used so there is quite a large amount imported, and that is all
the diesel sold up your way, from Bundaberg and North QLD, Darwin I
don't think has a a refinery does it?
most of that would probably come from south Asia because the cost of
shipping it from the south is too high
