Has anyone got one of the work shop manuals that cover the 1991 Toyota 4
Runner SR5 Limited.
Or a logbook that shows the correct tyre types and ratings ?
Or if someone with on of these can look at the tyre plackard on the sill
next to the drive (when the door is open) and jot down the figures.
I am head to head with someone I wish to buy a 4 runner off, RACQ inspection
and Transport Department and also the local Tyre shop all say the fitted
tyres are under rated and illigal, but seems there isn't much of an option
as to what tyres are legal for it. I realy need some help and advice to the
correctly rated tyres before I buy this thing.

Well mine a RV6 91 Forerunner, assuming that they are same:
Recommended Rim size 16x6J
Recommended Tyre Size 206R16
Recommended tyre pressures front = 170Kpa
Recommended tyre pressures rear = 240Kpa
This is straight off the Door jam plaque.
Mind you I have 31-10.5/15s on 7x15inch rims and its passed all its testing
so far.
Take account that these are RECOMMENDED sizes etc, not compulsory.

I will check my workshop manual but I think the SR5 was fitted with 15inch
tyres

I bet your tires are underrated
I had the same arguement when I first got my car
The SR5 limited has the wide body kit and therefore was fitted with 15x7
alloy wheels
The 15x7 alloy wheels were shod with 265x75R15 dunlop grandtrek with a load/
speed rating of 112S
These tires are useless off road so you want to get some allterrain at least
however there are NO all terrain tires that size with that load/speed rating
31x10.5R15 are almost the same size depending on brand whether they are
bigger all smaller due to tread depth and where the companies ruler was mad
:)
31x 10.5R15 generally have a load/speed rating of 109Q
Now try to convince your insurance company ( Victoria )that with a load
speed index of 109Q which equals 1030Kg per tire and 160km/h is sufficient
is the same as passing a turd the size brick. The same probably goes for
queensland pen pushers. I have got the car up to 150Km/h but probably not
over 4 tonnes
Or you could go back to Dunlop Grantrek but I found them impossible to get.
A quick look at http://www.dunloptyres.com.au/ just shows that dunlop
australia cannot even supply the original tire and this is because the prado
has 16 inch rims.

Yeah I think what they mean by rating is as mentioned here
the load/speed rating
BTW in QLD if you use tyres rated below what is standard you have to (I
think) have it marked on the tyre or tyre placard that the rating has
been reduced or something like that
I am not sure why they changed to this ruling, probably because one of
the pollies or their mates bought a high priced euro and didn't want to
pay the $500 each for the original tyres

Guys thanks for the replies. I have been trying to work out the reason for
the 112S tyres over the 109 or others as similar models seem to be able to
get the correctly rated tyres. I think I found a set of Coopers that fits
the 112 or better rating. And I guess the prices is ok for a big tyre,
around $240 each.
I was just told that if I had an accident that caused a death and had those
109 load rated tyres on the thing that an insurace company won't pay out the
accident.
I spoke to several people I know with surfs and other 4runners about
blowouts from under rated tyres, and they say they havn't heard of anyone
having a blowout.
But you all deserve a round of applause for taking the time to check this
out for me.
Many Thanks,
-Andrew

Are you in SE Qld at all skozzy? Theres cheaper places than $240 for
Coopers. The ST's SST's are around $220 andthe more road going unit slightly
less from memory. Makes a big difference on 4 or 5 tyres.

Northside of Brisbane.
I hope to get this 4x4 by the weekend, so if you can give me an address or
shop to go to that would be great.

My 4Runner isn't an SR5, so the rating may be a bit different, but the
placard says:
'The tyres fitted to this vehicle shall have a maximum load rating of not
less than 900kg, or load index of "104" and speed category symbol not less
than "R". '
Unless the SR5 (fully loaded) is more than 500kg heavier than the standard
4Runner, you shouldn't need tyres with a load rating of more than 109.
As for the speed rating, TRANSPORT OPERATIONS (ROAD USE MANAGEMENT?VEHICLE
STANDARDS AND SAFETY) REGULATION 1999 said:
"(3) A tyre fitted to a motor vehicle must, when first manufactured, have
been rated by the tyre manufacturer as suitable for road use at the lower
of?
(a) a speed of at least?
(i) for an off-road passenger vehicle?140 km/h; or
(ii) for a car or car derivative?180 km/h; or
(iii) for another motor vehicle?120 km/h; and
(b) the vehicle?s top speed.
Example for paragraph (a)(i)?
A four-wheel drive vehicle.
(4) This section applies to a motor vehicle instead of the tyre speed
category requirements in the relevant ADR."
Unless that's changed, it suggests to me that a speed rating of "N" is legal
for any 4WD in QLD.

I have just checked my (Toyota) workshop manual and it does not state the load
or speed rating - the handbook just says replace tyres with same or higher
rating
David
PS you could maybe ring around the car dealers and find a SR5 and go and have a
snealy peek at the door label
