Hi Guys.

I am seriously thinking about buying a Land Rover Discovery but I know some
of the earlier models had some serious, and expensive, problems and should
be avoided like the plague.

What models were these and what was the problem?

Apart from that are they a good vehicle in general? (as a tow vehicle not an
off-road vehicle).

Best regards

Some early models (no idea of dates) had problems with rear axles (oil
not getting to outter bearings due to LR putting in seals on the inside
of the bearing to stop an oil leak. Apparently this lasted for about 6
months before complaints started coming through. Somehow Landrover
really didn't think this quite through...)

Early models also had the usual R380 gearbox/ LT230 transfer problems.
Anything after about 1998 had this fixed properly, once and for all.
They then started using the same boxes as in the V8 defender, just had a
different location for the transfer lever.

no idea about towing, would rather take it off-road. But am guessing the
V8 or TD5 is reasonble for the job of towing.

I have a 1998 tdi auto Discovery.Of the 155000kms on the clock I have done
95000kms in 4years.I tow a Coromel 505 caravan about 1500kgs when loaded and
apart from the worst hills I don't know its there.
Ive had nothing go wrong with this vehicle it is serviced regulary.I had the
timing belt replaced at 100000 kms front discs and pads which I did my self
and a new battery.
Off road it is sensational the auto work well holding the car on some very
steep declines. I get close to 10kms per ltr. and 7kms per ltr when towing
the van.
Hope this helps you.

98 Disco Tdi auto

Thanks Dave and Simon.

That gives me something to go on.

I guess if I look for a 1999 or later model that would be the best option.

I guess the TDi model would be better than the V8 petrol?

Definately.
All sorts of probs with the V8's.
head gaskets
cam wear
loose cylinder liners (pressurises cooling system- blows out hoses, heater
o-rings etc.)
porous blocks
not to mention underpowered & thirsty

The old carb 3.5L's seem to be the most reliable IMHO.

Thanks Natalie. Very interesting comments.

I have a Rover VP with the 3.5L efi V8 and it runs quite nice, but the newer
3.5's in the Discoveries may have been modified and, possibly, not very
successfully!!

gary, interesting to see what your economy figures are for highway and round
town per tank.
Friends just bought a 94(?) Disco and the economy sucks. My RV6 gets around
100k per tank more for only 500cc less.

My 84 Rover VP 3500efi V8 gets roughly 700kms to a 70L tank.

I roughly work it out to cost about $10 per 100kms.

I think that is not too bad for a V8. The car weighs in at around 1500kg
(until I get in it of course!!)

Opps sorry that was "earlier" (had Japanese conversions switched on on PC)

Actually it looked like Chinese to me, but you know what they say???? It all
looks the same!!

Yes I would imagine my engine would be a much earlier version than the
current Discovery's.

My motor was produced from 1983 to 1987.

I think the main configuration would still be the same though. I do know
they have enormous room for improvements!
Some guys have turned these motors into 6 litre engines, but I think that is
pushing it too far. You can buy a standard kit to transform the 3.5L into a
5.0L without too much trouble at all. (But lots of $$$)

How do you mean Jerry?

I know I average about 10litres of fuel for every 100kms I travel. I live in
the country so most of it is country driving.

Garry, still 10L per 100km on V8 Rover 84.
This is VERY GOOD fuel economy.
cheers

OK. I thought it was good for a V8 yes, but I didn't think it was brilliant.

My MQ Nissan Turbo Diesle gets about the same economy, possibly slightly
worse, and it is twice the weight.
