4WDs Facing Increased Parking Levy

Hi,

It was reported in the Melbourne Sun/Herald that a number of councils
are about to introduce higher parking levies for 4WD's.

Moreland's mayor, Mark Higginbotham said that "We cant have everyone
driving gas guzzling 4WDs"

This seems absurd to me and the thin end of the wedge - My Falcon is
longer than my Prado and uses more fuel! And then a good many of the
larger 4WDs are Diesels or are on LPG. And what about Suzukis and
Subarus? Will they be penalised as well? And since when have councils
become entrusted with dictating private transport and fuel consumption
policies?

It seems to me that there is a nation wide concerted attack on 4WD's
and an attempt to get all of us into smaller cars. Every professional
and amateur do-gooder is jumping on the bandwagon. If it isn't
bull-bars then it is parking! What's next? A levy on externally mounted
winches? A ban on snatch straps?

I don't know who is behind it, but it too well organized to stem merely
from environmentalists and those who have concerns about road safety.

IT HAS TO STOP AND WE AS OWNERS HAVE TO TAKE SOME KIND OF ACTION TO GET
THE MESSAGE ACROSS TO THE GOVERNMENT THAT WE VOTE.

Cheers

Its not 'road safety' - look in the direction of NSW's Mr Scruby et al
www.walk.com.au.

Whilst in NSW our Local Government Minster looks set to take action to stop
this Local Government money grab, it should be borne in mind come election
time, to not vote those folk sitting, from getting back in where their
Council tries it on.

The way I see it, if you get hit by larger charges for parking your 4x4 and
it is smaller in size than other cars in the street you would have a case
for discrimination, as these councils are charging on type not size of car.
My Cadillac uses more fuel and is a lot bigger than my landcruiser by then I
don't live in these areas.

The other consideration is that *if* I lived in inner Sydney, I would not be
driving my Landcruiser around very much anyhow. Even now, we take the
Subie when we go to Sydney, leave it at a someone's house and use the
trains. While some locals will drive to the corner store (then drive back
home again looking for a park!), how fair is this to people who only keep a
car so they can get out of town on the weekends?

Some people aren't happy unless they are interfering in other people's
business. Maybe they ought to get out of Sydney more often.
