holden radio code

Just had to get a new battery in my VX commodore and don't have the security
code for the radio. Local holden dealer wants $22 to look it up.
Anyone know any way around this, or any customer friendly Holden dealers
willing to do the right thing & not charge?

$22 isn't a huge amount, but it's the principle. Holden claim this is a
"security feature" but it looks like just one more way to get money out of
people to me. I can prove ownership of the vehicle. If it was a genuine
security feature that should be enough, and the code should be provided
free.

My ford dealer does it for nothing , use another dealer , take the
papers and ask , should be free.

Yep, sure is,
When I owned my VZ Holden, the service dept was so busy with irate
customers that they just treated you like a registration number.

Nah, they just see so little of their customer in the service dept
that they can remember each one.

I had that problem once.  Just go to another Holden dealer.  Not all charge
for it - it takes them less than 1 minute.

Clockmeister - Thankyou so much!
Just out of interest is the code able to be derived from the VIN number by
some formula, or is it only available from Holdens database?

There is no formula since the radio's are outsourced and the PIN comes with
the radios. Lionheart, which is a kind of intranet for Holden dealers
accessed through the internet contains every little detail about the vehicle
by VIN number, including security information.

cassette deck tommorrow night, it should fetch around $2 at markets :)

The code should be on some "security card" supplied with the car, most
usually found shoved in the manual.

Interestingly, I don't believe that the VT onwards radios actually have
their own code. When I bought my car 2nd hand I had them change the radio
over to a CD version. Same PIN code....which makes me think it's more to do
with the cars computer/VIN than anything else.

Try other Holden dealers. Paying a small fee is one thing but $22 is a bit
steep. I paid $30 to have a new key programmed and that involved more
time/effort than a quick computer search.

They do.

It isn't, except for VY/VZ where the BCM knows what the radio code should be
and it doesn't need to be programmed.
When the radio is swapped for whatever reason the BCM can be programmed to
accept the new code.

He's got it for free from a Holden dealer, ina roundabout way :-)

Not really, programming a remote takes all of two minutes.

So what needs to happen if I pull out a 6 disc changer deck from a wreck and
put it in an exec? Get a holden dealer to program the BCM? Would showing
them the wreckers receipt be enough to convince them it's not stolen?
B00ST - 02 Mar 2006 22:29 GMT
No, the radio will ask you for the PIN. You will need the correct PIN for
the new deck from the wrecker. Once you enter the number correctly into the
new radio, it will send a data message on a network bus to the BCM and the
BCM will store the new PIN.

Or alternatively give Clockmeister the VIN of the wreck :)

It's a few bucks at best, and most places will do it for you for free if you
ask nice.

Still, if you're a tight arse with an attitude, most will want to charge you
full bore retail or tell you to f.ck off.

You have tits. Flash them. That's what they're for.

It's only stupid to you because you're looking to get out of paying it. Ask
the moron you bought the car from where the code is, or try a couple of
dealerships and see if one can help you out. Being a single mum or not makes
no difference to the bloke at the dealership.

> As for the attitude , yeah who doesnt !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

People who are generally looking for free help, and hoping to get it :)
