Im pretty sure that these are both illegal to use in Qld but anyone know
what the penalties for having them in use are?
Anyone useing one (or have a mate, wink wink) thats useing one. Would like
to know what the viability of getting one is.
Cheers

I think W.A. is still OK with them. Just drive slower, it's cheaper. If
you get caught, it's like 1500 bucks or something (NSW).

I concur. Driving slower may also save a life.

$200 is about the norm for a first offence, and you lose the detector
as well. It's also a court appearance but you don't lose demerit
points. Probably $1,000 for a second offence.

Nothing to stop you buying one out of the US, where they're cheap as
chips (relative to what the local suppliers charge). They do need
re-alignment every couple of years to keep them at peak performance
but it's still probably still cheaper to buy out of the US and throw
them away when they need a tune up.
Unless you're very experienced at using one you'll probably get caught
long before then in any case. :))

Some 10+ years ago it cost me $768 plus a $135 speeding fine.

To be honest not worth it given the fines. In my case it saved my licence
but took it's toll on my wallet.
Learnt my lessons the hard way.

In Qld, you can be fined for having one in your vehicle, working or not.
maximum penalty is 40 penalty units. One penalty unit is $75.= $3000.
Cops have radar detector detectors also.
Still want one?

Not at all, its due to the fact that in doing so many kms each year you get
a bit complacent with a few kms over on occasion. Even keeping up with
traffic can sometimes end up going over and even though your new to the area
and not 100% sure of the limit everyone else is doing over but you are the
one that gets picked out.
Either that or the fact that, hell the speedo goes up to 180 why not let it
rip and see if I can peel it over that mark eh.

Well, we certainly don't need any detectors to tell us that you have

I pay my taxes.
I pay my rego.
I pay insurance.
I have a well maintained vehicle.
When i was taught to drive they said "drive to the conditions".
If the conditions dicate that i need to go a little faster than what
some little prick behind a desk in canberra thinks i should be doing on
a particular stretch of road he has probably never seen.. then i shall
do so.
And i totaly disagree with the same little prick behind the desk
putting a speed camera on that stretch of road and making a fortune
when what he is supposed to be doing is fighting for our rights, not
looking for new ways to screw more money out of us. /end rant

Am i?
In 17 years of driving i have been caught out by speed cameras only
twice.
How many times have you helped pay for that lobster lunch little johnny
is eating?

My first car had a speedo that wasn't so accurate. I figured that out after
the 2nd speed camera fine. I saw the camera car, checked my speed.. and the
bastard still flashed.

My radar detector has paid for itself a number of times. And I don't
speed (well not often)
Last long w/end I was whistling along the road stuck behind a couple of
bunnies who were sitting on 95/98 (where you can get away with up to
110). There was no houses, no stock, no people, no sideroads, nothing,
straight road you could see for miles. 10 or 15 cars stuck behind me and
a steady streem of cars coming towards. But with breaks, which the
second bunny wouldn't take advantage of.
So there comes a bigger break in the oncoming trafic which I decide to
jump them both. Halfway past the 2nd car the detector starts going
crazy. That little dot a K up the road is a cop.
Pull in in between the 2 bunnies and wait for the cop to come past. I
KNOW I would have been doing 140/150 going past the front bunny if I had
done them both (twin turbo Subaru)
That detector is worth every penny that my daughter paid for it.

If they're vehicle mounted they're usually are radar actuated. If
permenant mounted on a pole with a loop in the road you can get Nav-Sat
devices which have those sites programed in as Points of Interest.
Correction to my earlier post:
the car comming towards me with the radar was a member of the Uniform
Branch of the Tax Department.

Why? They would do absolutely no good in Qld, if you cant see a friggen
great white LandCrusier with a snorkle and all sign written you deserve to
be caught and the fact that theres no fixed cameras in Qld yet.

I am not in queensland.
Here in vic cops like to hide behind trees.
And there are plently of fixed cameras.
Down here they even have little mobile cameras that they can chain to a
tree then leave.

In NSW I believe it's NINE demerit points. In terms of demerit points,
this is the most severe penalty there is. In other words, having an
unrestrained toddler in the back while you're talking on your mobile
phone isn't considered as bad as this.
I think that says a lot...
