Aldi's great apple rip off

Reverse Cowboy - 25 Mar 2006 01:29 GMT I was at the Bonnyrigg Aldi today, and they were selling new season Fuji apples for $12.00 per kilo, with a sign saying inflated price is due to tropical depression Larry. I spoke with the manager and pointed out that apples aren't a crop of Boganfail, so why should the price be affected. He said that due to the Banana crop being wiped out, more people are buying apples which has pushed the market price up.
Does this sound correct?

NSW grows a sh.t-load of Bananas - so the prices should be well moderated by this - as to apples? Sounds like BS - a new market update should be out in the next couple of days....

======= Note - Lady Fingers went DOWN in this report........... 17 and 27% respectively. =======
Weekly update 20/03/2006 Week ending 20 March 2006
The recent cyclone in far North Queensland decimated the current Cavendish banana and papaw crops. The expected grave shortages that are expected in the near future has resulted in skyrocketing prices. Reduced supplies of broccoli, red capsicum and both egg tomatoes and field gourmet tomatoes also sold well at improved rates.
Lady’s Finger bananas were in better supply in the early part of the week with the market weakening but this will more than likely be a temporary situation in light of the position with Cavendish bananas. More Cherry tomatoes, lettuce, chokos, brussel sprouts, zucchini and round stringless beans were available and prices eased across all varieties.

Bananas need a warm client. It's not warm enough in NSW for bananas to grow adequetally.
ShazWozza - 25 Mar 2006 03:49 GMT > Bananas need a warm client. It's not warm enough in NSW for bananas to > grow adequetally. False. The climate at Coffs is excellent for banana production. According to figures from the Coffs Harbour City Council, in the late 1960's NSW produced 80% of Australia's banana crop.

There was some expert on the radio (Auntie) saying that 80% of Australia's banana crop was wiped out so the damage to plantations must have been fairly catastrophic.

I was reading this site the other day. Which states some recent regional banana info. http://www.bananaland.com.au/environews/library/catalogue/vital.php
SOME INDUSTRY VITAL STATISTICS a.. About 12,000 hectares of Australia is currently under bananas. b.. Most bananas are grown in North Queensland (about 80%), approx. 15% in NSW and the remainder in the Northern Territory and Western Australia.

I'm not sure where you get your information from, but according to the Australian Banana Growers' Council, 80% of Australia's commercial bananas are grown in Queensland. Of that, approximately 50% are in the Tully, Innisfail and Tablelands area, and about one third of that crop is destroyed. Then they go on to say that "It is unclear how much of the crop will require a total replant, compared with that which can be regrown from suckers. This will be known in a couple of weeks' time after closer inspection is possible."
So the facts are that one third of 40% of the total crop MAY have been destroyed, but most will be able to be regrown from suckers. For the uneducated (most of you), one third of 40% is about 13% - POSSIBLY DESTROYED - but probably able to be regrown from suckers. This is a long way from the morons claim that 95% were destroyed. Please learn to read the facts BEFORE you post in future. OK? That is all.

Do you realise that Australia is a continent as well as a country? The Hutt River Province is located within Australia (the continent) therefore is Australian, in much the same way that the city of Bejing is considered Asian..

NSW has a thriving crop but has generally been pushed out of the market by the sheer volume grown in QLD. In 1993 NSW was growing 25% of Australia's crop. QLD's market dominance has affected sales of NT and WA bananas as well.

Same with sugar cane, in QLD you harvest annually, in NSW every two years.
And smaller bananas (of the same variety) will nearly always be superior to the larger ones.

Why would you sell NSW grown bananas in NSW at a price that gives you less income than would transporting them to QLD, and selling them there?
In an effecient market the difference in price should be equal to the transport costs.

The OP didn't say bulk. He said 'if you buy the bigger size, it's ALWAYS cheaper'. Are you seriously suggesting that 150 ltrs ISN'T bigger than 4 litres? Back to school for you sonny. Some products where a certain size(mainly larger sizes) is exclusive to one particular outlet, it will be more expensive.
But the products that are commonly available.
Ex. Allens lollies. The special pack which is 50% bigger costs 100% more. But the special bigger pack is exclusive to Woolworths.
Big W, Coles, Target, K-Mart, etc. also have exlusive deals for some sizes for products.

Yeah, that will make them sh.t themselves - NOT. Do you even know what the ACCC is about? Anti-competition. How, pray tell, is raising prices ANTI competition? If anything, it's the reverse. Go back to skool and learn about supply and demand. If demand increases, supply decreased, hence the price rises. It's basic, basic economics. That is all.
