Two years ago I asked for and received great advice about buying a very
cheap used car. I ended up with that little economical trooper - an '89 Ford
Laser. I'm hoping that there might be more advice to be had here.

Last time I did not have much money to play with. This time I have a bit
more. I'm looking for an equally economical, later model (around 1999,
2000), small, with a hatch, somewhere around $11-14K, with aircon and a
manual preferred.

Anyone got some advice on what I should I look for?

How about a brand new Getz?. It's on the high side of your budget I know.

Or perhaps an almost new one?. Saves you a couple of grand I guess.

What is it about the Getz you like? Looks a little gutless to me (not that
I'm a hoon or anything).

It depends on what you want power or economy.
New one has 70 kw which isn't too bad for a 1.4L engine so it would have ok
performance.

highway speeds with some care , Ive been in it when he did and between
us we weigh 200kg + and the car and I'm quite tall and can get int it ...
take a look at least or you might end up with a used corola .

That's funny. That's what my mechanic recommended I look for. What's the
issue with Corolla's?

None, they are the most reliable car ever made but they hold their price
very well and you will pay almost as much for a 5 yr old Corolla as for
a new Getz.

Nothing's wrong with them That's why so many people buy them (& helps keep
the used price higher than an equivalent car from someone else). It's a no
brainer as far as reliability and reputation goes. Mind you, Hyundai has a
reputation that's growing in leaps and buonds for the right reasons too.
You're also getting a new car with one of the best warranty periods
around. No I don't own one or work for Hyundai!

NRMA all-up running costs on the 95 models started at 38c/Km for the Getz
versus 48c/Km for the Corolla if that's something to factor in.
Cheers

I agree. Three of us did Nowra to Sydney and back in one a couple of weeks
ago in a 2yo one. Given that the new one's better it'd be hard not to
recommend at the price. Throw in a 5yr warranty and *especially* that at
the moment you can get the 5dr for the same price as the 3dr! Cheers

They offer 2 engines, a 1.4lt or a 1.6lt, the 1.4 might be a bit gutless
but the 1.6 should be fine.
I recently drove an Accent with the 1.6lt engine and whilst it was no
rocket its performance was acceptable, the Getz is a lighter car so the
performance should be better than the Accent.

A gutless little Korean POS.

The one good thing about buying second hand is that you are not constrained
to buying the cheapest car on the market.

The only reason people buy these shitty little Korean cars is because they
believe that a new Hyundai is better than a 2~3yr old Toyota.
and in the sense that the Korean has a new car warranty, they are correct.
But when you are only looking at second hand, why bother.
For 14k, you can easily pick up a 3yr old Corolla.
A little bit older if you stick to your lower budget.
They are a quality car, reasonably powerful, good specs, and a variety of
models to choose from.
The down side being that they are not known for their "flair," and that they
are extremely common.
(but of course the Koreans are common also.)

Hyundai are offering the 5 door for the price of a 3 door at the moment
which would make it a very good buy.

Toyota Corolla, my wife has a 2000 model and its been extremly reliable.
If I had to find a fault with it it would be that it seems a bit hard on
tyres, the first set only lasted approx 40,000klm and it looks like the
second set isn't going to last much longer.

So you've had to replace the car in less than 2 years, and during that
time risked your life driving an old bomb. Doesn't sound like great advice
to me.

The car I've been driving is now 17 years old. It is not pretty but it's not
a bomb (my mechanic says it's easily got another 10 years in it if I want)
but I would like aircon and a few more features now I can afford it. Nothing
wrong with wanting an upgrade (should have guessed from your addy that you
not be very supportive).

Another option to consider is a recent model Mazda 2, or one of the last
of the 323s.  Both good reliable vehicles without much flair.  Corollas
(like some folk have already said) are good too, but you'll pay a bit
compared to similar cars.

The small Koreans are a great buy, especially if you're planning to
keep them for less than 6 years or so.  I generally do about 20 000km
per year and find 5-6 years to be the normal trouble free period, then
some minor work is typically needed.

If you buy second hand, get written receipts for servicing, and check
that what was done matches the handbook.  If buying new, always service
according to the schedule - saves heaps of problems later.
