Crash Lander - 09 May 2006 13:53 GMT Hi guys and gals! "IF" I decided to sell my Pajero, what should I expect it to sell for. Not interested in red book numbers or blue sheet prices or whatever they are. I'm interested in what people here might be willing to pay. Details are: 1996 NJ Pajero. GLX. 3.5L DOHC on LPG. Has 7 seats. Car has done about 305,000km, and currently has a cracked head (or block, not sure. It's knackered whatever it is.) I am putting a replacement motor in it which has a 6 month , 20,000km warranty. It will not be a reco motor, but a second hand one, with 'around 100,000km' on it. Tyres are only about 5 months old and would still have about 80% tread. Brakes have just been done 2 months ago, both front and back. Timing belt was done about 40,000km ago, and this belt will be put into the replacement motor if it hasn't already had one recently. Also will put water pump onto replacement motor, as this is also only 40,000km old. Brand new thermostat also. (Not a big thing, but these are worth over $70!) Gas converter has had a kit put through it 2 months ago. Rego is due next month, so car would also have a full years rego if I decide to sell it. Car hasn't been off road in at least 3 years. Car would have a roadworthy certificate, and is in Geelong Victoria. Thoughts? Crash Lander
Signature I'm not always right, But I'm never wrong!

They're usually all "around 40,000ks" but have actually done 250,000 :-)

If only! This engine was apparently re-built at 157,000km. I'm guessing because of a timing belt. When I bought it at 200,000km, they gave me a copy of the receipt showing they spent $9500 on the rebuild! At about 240,000km, she started blowing smoke like she was designed to do it! Hopefully, the replacement engine will give at least another 100,000km before needing work. Crash Lander
Toby Ponsenby - 10 May 2006 14:19 GMT >>>NOt much wrong with the Pajeros really, just they have been given the >>>Soccer [quoted text clipped - 10 lines] > before needing work. > Crash Lander I wonder about those 6G72's. They 'appear' to be just fine in service. BUT... Ferinstance, many were fitted with bad oil pressure senders. Not immediately bad, but about 160,000Kms bad. f.cked a hell of a lot of engines, that 2-bit part.
And yes, then there's the timing belts. Seems to me that missing the odd oil change managed to decrease the lifespan of the belts to a remarkable degree. Some say that the nitrile belts can only go round a certain number of times, and then they die. Some say their lifetime depends to a large extent on valve train friction they need to overcome. (I'm in the latter group there)
And then there's the cooling systems. Not all that flash at all if not maintained to within and inch of their lives.
So, I reckon even though the engine was used in heaps of applications, it'll most probably never achieve 'legend' status. Either good or bad:-)
Seems to me that Mr Mitsubishi had high hopes for the Pajero, what with water-proof instruments and decent air-cleaning systems and a clever drive-train. (Jeep?) But they didn't try hard enough with their engines. Rather, the bean counters got in there about two thirds of the way through development and did a number on the car. Hell, the even sold Pajero with that idiotic balance-shaft 'Astron'. A 4WD, complete with drivers foot-well vent FFS, with an engine literally designed to kick itself up th' arse waay too early for comfort. Says it all, really.

I've had 2 V6 Tritons go over 350,000 without any oil use, then again, I baby them with regular oil changes.

I'm constantly amazed by people who don't understand the benefits of regular servicing. I serviced my sons EA yesterday and I found a leaking hose to the gas convertor, if I hadn't been under the bonnet doing a service the leak might have gone unnoticed until it was too late.

Well that is what you will get........ "what people are willing to pay" and that is pretty damn close to red book

Save yourself the hassle, get your current motor exchange recod and save yourself some hassle. At best you're just putting back in another turd that you know NOTHING of it's history.
