Hi,
Sorry for shouting but...every morning when i start the car the radio fires
up at full pelt and scares the bejesus outta me. It only happens when the
car is cold, ie below 10 degrees, which is every day at the moment. The
volume knob does not respond very well to turning either and takes quite a
while to turn the radio down... Has anyone also experienced this? How
should i try to fix it. It's a 1999 TS Astra with standard blaupunkt head
unit.
Thanks
Benaud

Dunno anything about that head unit, but the boss's Mitsi Express van had a
somewhat similiar problem, in that when the car was cold the radio would
slowly build up volume to full noise, regardless of volume knob setting.
Ended up being some crap caught in the variable resister / graphite strip
"thing" that must have been pushing against it when it was cold, but once
the cabin warmed up it didnt put the pressure on anymore? Either way,
cleared the crap out and it worked fine.

It could be that your speed dependant automatic volume control is playing
up. Try disabling it by pressing the LOC button for at least 3 seconds until
you hear the beep. The display will show the current setting, something like
SD-VOL X where X is a number between 0 and 5.
Press the tuning buttons to reduce the number to zero. Hold LOC again for
another three seconds to store the new setting.
See how that goes.
