Bullbars ARE useful

Hit a roo at highway speed last night (although I wasn't going very fast
because I worry about roos) on the Captain's Flat road, 12 years after
putting the bullbar on for exactly this reason (roos infest that road like a
plague).  It jumped straight onto the road from the bush that comes down to
the road, all I could do was steer away from it, so it hit the left corner,
and it was veering away also. I felt the wheel hump over something.... its
foot?

Made a terrible noise and my chihuahua cartwheeled off the passenger seat
(luckily I'd been to the Spotlight sale so the footwell was piled up with
pillows and things), pulled over and got out.

Well, the roo had flogged off, either to die somewhere else, or just
slightly injured, and the (coke-can-esque) car had no damage whatsoever.
It's an iron bullbar, and it wasn't even dented.

Roo was mid to largish in size too.

Thank you for that, I can justify having my bullbar now:-)

Have not taken out a 'roo with me bullbar yet, however I think
I can claim I am the only person here to kill a smallish 'roo
with rear step tow bar. The hoops stick out a bit further than
the body and give a nasty slap to the head of a 'roo.

Disclaimer: No 'luxen or rear step bars were damaged/dented or
otherwise inconvenienced during this event.

Speaking of bullbars, why don't Australian police cars have them?  In the US
they do and their cop cars look much 'tougher' than ours.  They also have
bars on the rear windows and hard plastic rear seats, which I don't believe
ours have either.

Nope, I have a feeling that the US cop cars are far more durable than ours.

For example, in the US, its not uncommon to still see 10-year-old police
cars in use, or possibly even older ones in smaller/rural communities.  The
fact that they last that long under such strain is quite amazing.  I would
like to see how a 10-year-old Falcon police car holds up!

(this also applies to US taxis as well - they are generally older on average
than the Australian equivalents - although I do realize this has to do with
the law in Victoria about a taxi being under a certain age).

Seem to hold up just fine if you look about, those Ex chasers in the
hands of hoons still seem to be coping well

in 1990 I was in Sydney
got off the train and was greeted with old Taxis the oldest was a silver
HQ premier, there were lots of VB - VLs and only one VN/VP plus a couple
of XD-XF fords

coming from Brisbane where the oldest cab is usually only 4-5 years old
it was as if the train was a time warp machine

LOL - because those cars weren't used for 10 YEARS as police cars!  They
were probably only used for a couple of years before being sold off.  The US
cars I'm referring to have been in constant use as police cars for 10+
years!

Might have something to do with the fact that in some parts of the US
ramming by Police cars is still practiced

here the Police are not allowed to use their vehicle in such a way,
hence no need for nudge bars

I think they might be for the police to be able to push a car off to the
side of the road if necessary.  The cop cars in NZ have these bars at the
front for this purpose as well (I saw it on Motorway Patrol once).

A friend installed a shoo roo some years back, and a roo launched off a
culvert and landed on his car! He was very indignant, and wondered if he'd
installed it wrong and made it into a roo-attracter.

Blow it out your arse Michael.

If people wish to walk or drive into the path of my Jeep when they
shouldn't, they'll get a 1/4 inch thick metal bullbar right in the head.

My car is made from lightweight metal. You can bend it with one finger. A
hit on a roo would result in many new panels, and an engine re-build.  My
car is a Suzuki Swift on a 4WD chassis, with a heavier transmission. You
think hanging a bullbar on it suddenly elevates its killing ability?

Pedestrians are dead if they are hit by a car, bullbar or not. And,
pedestrians are not road users, they are technically intruding on the road.

I'd almost forgotten what an utter moron you are.

Yeah I had a similar experience a couple of years back. Everyone told
me it was a waste of money but when that drunk walked out in front of
my car there wasn't any damage to the car, a bit of skin and stuff in
the bar but that cleaned off ;)

I had two run into the side of the Courier on Sunday morn between
Mundubbera and Eldsvold (4amish). Cleaned the dirt off the door and side
bin, heaps of them took off before I got to them. The "shoo-roo" might
be working. Don't want to know if it's an omen for my Broome trip I'm
just starting.

Fine by me for what I'm starting on Wednesday.
Mine is an old July '96 model though.
It's raised a little for clearance, neoprene bushes fitted to spring
mountings, modified for front/rear attack, has 15" wheels, 235x70 tyres,
bullbar and fully kitted as a home with everything working off 12v
(lights, toothbrush, shaver, computers, TV, mp3, air compressor, fridge,
soldering iron) and it has a double-skin fly for the hot/wet weather,
*but* will not be used for excessive O/R slogging, just a little of the
Gibb River Road-Tunnel Creek-Leopard Downs Road.

I ran up to Townsville to shake it up a little, via the inland route to
Rockhampton and can report nothing negative. Good start...fingers
crossed. Can't wait actually. It's not Athol's bus, but it will be
cheaper to run, barring anything drastic of course.

damage, bullbar is worthwhile on four wheel drives and utes/trucks, but the

Had a steel bar on my 70 Fiat 125 - hit two roos, bent the outer wing back but
narya scratch on the Fart.  Next car a '75 180B, steel bar - scored two with
that, no car damage.  SW(now)MBO hit one dead centre on the stee roobar on the
Kombi camper at ~90k not far from Broken Hill.  No vehicle damage.  So far I'm
in front.

Missed a bull coming out of the verge canegrass near Kununurra one night.  The
sod's saliva was all down the side windows as I frantically avoided impact.  Now
in THAT instance the bar wouldn't have helped in an impact.

Saw a Falcodore ute with a bullbar that had run into a bull.  Top of the bonnet
was restyled, and the cab above bonnet line was simply sheared off.

Bullbars are fine on semis and other vehicles with the strength/weight to back
them up.  Roobars on cars/utes can be very useful, but low roobars to match the
lower bonnet line render them fairly useless against roos or anything taller
than a cat.

I've seen a Mack Superliner that hit a herd of cattle out Emerald way,
there was cowshit covering the whole cab and sleeper up and over the
roof, even the front of the trailer got some
the bullbar was pushed back about 6 inches at the top and that was it

I dunno, I think the cows scored something, they got some revenge.  The
bullbar might have survived, but I bet that driver was smelling cow pooh for
months.

The bull bar on my late EF paid itself off twice.  It was an alloy bar,
cost me $850 to install, and saved me $1800 in insurance excess as I'm
under 25.

The first incident was 4 months after I had the bar installed.  Came
over the crest of a hill at ~70 - 80, and the roo was standing smack
bang in the middle of my lane.  Braked hard and hit it at maybe 60k's.
No damage to the car, my driving lights copped a fair beating, but I was
able to put them back together on the side of the road.  The bull bar
was fine, it needed re-adjusting which took me 5 minutes the next day.
The roo took off into the night.

Second incident, the roo jumped out in front from out of a driveway.  I
hit the thing at 70 - 80k's with the front drivers side corner of the
car.  This one was killed instantly, again with no damage to the car
except a spilt coke on the passenger seat.  Fortunately the roo had no
joey, so I shifted the body to the side of the road and continued on.

I think that bull bars should not be allowed in a suburban enviroment.

AndWhyIsThat?

I read some really stupid stuff here, however if a driver
can't take responsibility for their own actions (even while
pissed or whatever) humankind has lost the battle.

Now, do you wanna withdraw that utterly stupid post?

So that is why you dont need to wear a seat belt eh?

Get real.  The laws are made to protect the population.

I would make a law that says if bull bars are not pedestrian friendly
then they cannot be allowed.

Nope.

End of story.

I would make a law that says that anyone with a dumb theory must test it
themselves.
You get to get hit by a Hilux without a bullbar then if you survive we
will do the test again with a bullbar.
You won't survive the first test which will prove that bullbars are no
more dangerous to pedestrians than bumper bars:-)

Getting under your skin now then?

Sorry I am not going to bow down and kiss your ski boots.

Did eating all those apples give you a personality disoder too?

But anyway in my defense (get over it), on my trip back at night from
Sydney, There were two idiots riding bikes around 9pm between Goulburn
and the turn-off to Canberra.  Safe?  I don't think so.

And are you proposing that all vehicles remove them at the edge of suburbia?
Provide storage? The residents of suburbia to pay the costs of this?

How about adding that they be required on all vehicles west of the
mountains? Makes about as much sense from a practical point of view. If you
are proposing to prevent non-urban residents from driving into cities say
so, but don't be surprised if we expect the sentiment to be reciprocated.

Yep.  Thats why they banned fishing holders on bull bars.  Oh I know
you will all say they are not dangerous.

More a question of wrong/inappropriate design. Yep, sharp objects not
in line with the rest of the vehicle is a bit silly (excluding tow
hitch which has to be done that way).

I once had some idiot leave a notice on me vehicle complaining about
tow hitch - obviously walked past and bumped knee or somesuch on.

The bit that bolts to the rear step bumper of 4x4 and comes down by
around 20 cm and back by around 20 cm and has a tow ball (with optional
half tennis ball over the top). However you knew that :-) or were you being
a goose {neck} :-p

Fishing Rod holders are not banned
you just have to make sure they do not protrude outside the bar or
present a sharp edge that may injure a person(even someone walking past
your car) when not in use, but if you are using then to hold rods then
it's fine to have them

same as most holders for carrying loads, they just have to be removed
when not in use
