The "better" car would be the one you like the most.

Corolla.
My local Toyota dealer also sells Suzuki, I asked the spare parts blokes
what they thought of Suzuki's, they couldn't think of anything good to
say about them.
This was before the current model Swift which is getting good reviews so
maybe they are a better car.

Find rental places that have them

I did this a few years back because the dealers started the half hour
test drive with salesman.

I hired the car for 24hrs and gave it a hiding

I was after a small car for the family and settled on the Corolla

What can you learn in a half hour drive with a monkey saying 'you aRE
OVER REVVING'

Hire it for 24hrs for $80, it may cost you $300 for a few 'test drives'
but imagine getting a high priced lemon just because it looked good

Depends what you want in your car. If you want virtually lengendary
reliability with probably the best resale of any car in the mass-production
car fleet of this and quite a few other countries, the Toyota is the go.

OTOH, the Suzuki may have features which really appeal to you. The Toyotas
have been critisised for being "uninspiring" and too bland in the past. I
have a '95 Camry which has an instrument panel and dash-controls, layout
etc, which reminds me of the old '75 Corona I had once, but the rest of the
car  bears no resemblance. It has 175,000Ks and drives like close to like
new.  Suzuki have a name which has been around for a very long time, not in
the big car stakes, but in many other fields such as motorbikes, and they
are a respected manufacturer.

The one you prefer to drive.

Then find one that's done 10 or 20,000 kms and save a lot of money.

In the case of the corolla, they have a $19,990 drive away deal going so the
second hand ones about a year old are only about a thousand dollars cheaper.

I'm astounded by what the dealers are asking for 1-2 year old models of
anything really after having a look around.

Yes, the dealers charge an arm and a leg for a young second hand car.
Buy private.

Except if you have a trade-in and can't be bothered selling privately.

The pricetag isn't what they will sell the car for.
