Had cause to go to the Woollongong area yesterday, and the road I took
was Illawarra Road - route 48. Ever been on this road?

I was towing the trailer and suddenly wished I wasn't when I hit a
certain part of Macquarie Pass. 15km/h hairpin turn that should not be
called a hairpin; it was more like driving down fire stairs that do a
complete 180 degree turn with a common rail between them.

The only reason I was able to make the turn at all was because I had
enough visibility to start the turn completely on the wrong side of the
road to begin the apex. Even then, once I'd come around I was partially
on the wrong side of the road again.

Now I know dual cab utes have some of the worst turning circles out
there, but surely proper road engineering would not allow this kind of
turn in a road?

You should try it in a bus!

There were plans for a replacement road about 20 years ago, it never got
built. If you're going to/from the Hume, it might be better to use Picton Rd
instead.

Fun on a bike though! I for one don't want to see the road changed.
Something that went along side it or something might be ok, but it'd be a
shame to get rid of such a nice piece of drivers/riders road.

There were a fair few bikes around. Problem was they were all stuck
behind cars tip-toeing around.

Yeah, it really catches you out when you are used to taking corners at
20ks more than the signposted speed! That one's actually posted at the
speed you want to be doing, not a down-rated speed.

Semi's and buses do this road all the time, but I guess it helps if
you've been there before.

Wollongong!

Yeah I'd imagine the locals would be used to completely giving way to
semis and buses, because there's no way they'd get around that one
particular corner without starting and finishing on the wrong side of
the road (heading towards the 'gong that is).

First time I went down the pass was at night.  The signs saying
"Caution, trucks may be reversing on some bends" sum up those curves
nicely.  Despite those signs though, it was still quite a surprise to
find I had to go to full lock to get the Falcon around one of the hairpins.

Truck drivers all talk to each other over channel 40 so that two trucks
don't meet between the two hair pins.  That could be nasty.

Some of those turns are very tight.  Coming up in the wet in a rear
drive car with plenty of power makes for some light entertainment,
though...
