Drove a 380: Impressions on the VE

OK back here briefly (ant :-) )

First I hired a 380 over 4 days and frankly I like the shape and size,
thought the rear is a bit funny, and  the interior was nice, with the
build quality top notch even for the base car. Bloody hell it had alm
ost as many features as my now gone VX Berlina.  Great power and
drivability.  Got 9.5L/100 on the open road and 11.3 around town.

Everyone who looked at it from my family liked it, but they were scared
of by the V6 fuel  comsumption.  Who isnt?

So we were having tea and they release the VE on the news.  Coming from
a Holden family, we just looked at each other and said "More of the
same".  Holden could have made a grunty statement with the front ala
Audi or Volkswagen but  chose not to scare the horses by carrying over
the look from the VY.  Then they showed the interiors.  Christ that
orange was shocking.  And the red dial lights on the Calais looked
tacky compared to the cool blu of the 380.

Then today I read sure the VE will have ESP as standard across the
range, and curtain bags as an option, but a 4 speed auto on the
Berlina?  Mmmmm, with the 380 having a 5 speed auto  I think Holden
have made a tactical error.  There is not enough in the VE to attract
me, unless the fuel figures are significally less than the outgoing
model.

Looks like I am a 380 convert.

I'll probably regret asking this, but what is the connection between
380s and a perceived sexual preference.....?

You see thats ok a car that size there arent many options for RWD (BMW
1 series but they are a bit pricey.) But yeah cars that size are
generally associated with females so men driving them are generally
lumped into the FWD = Gay crowd.

So, by this log, the Honda Accord, Nissan Maxima and Toyota Camry are all
HOMOSEXUAL? I think not.

My take: FWD = CHEAP.

By your logic, 84% of FWD drivers are female. That's highly improbable.

You're wrong.

Everyone knows automatics are for homosexuals. It's a well established fact
that homosexuals cannot use a clutch.

Um, no.

Homosexuality & automatics is a myth, with no direct correlation ever being
recorded. However, "sports" car ownership, the likes of *real* powerful toys
like MX-5's and S2000's,  by males over 21 is a certified sign of being a

Why a V8, they are too slow, V8 drivers cry when you blow them away in a
na 2.0lt:-)
If you want to keep up with a decent Lotus 7 you need at least 300kw at
the rear wheels and even then you will only just keep up till the first
corner, after that the Lotus will be so far ahead you won't even know
which way it went:-)
But if you want to go really fast then put the V8 in the Lotus:-)

That'd be 253 owners, and they're gay for not owning a *real* V8 anyway.

I'm not sure what its name is but it's a pommy Mini magazine(Mini World?)
that I saw in the newsagents last week that had a yellow Mini on the cover
with a 470BHP 383SBC and 6 speed manual trans, it was road registered and

There's a guy getting around various race tracks in (I think) some
sort of Lotus, but it's fitted with a blown Honda VTEC engine. That
sucker pulls out and overtakes 911 GT3's down the main straight at
Eastern Creek and only really loses out in the 240+km/h area. I have
an onboard video somewhere, if you're interested.

Hmmm. I think we have a difference of opinion when it comes to the
definition of "metrosexual". I always thought it meant "appear as gay
as possible without actually getting any man-poo on your dick". That
seems to fit for the Sydney siders anyway.

Yeah, but those 4WDs that can do 4WD on the tar are super poofy. Real men
(and me) drive cars where you have to get out and fight the hubs to put it
into 4WD, and only on loose surfaces. Those tar-enabled 4wds are almost

Jeeps are especially poofy, and tend to break down in the middle of any
contest which spoils it quite a bit. They are designed to appeal to Poofs
who want to pretend they are not poofs, and so try to out-bloke non-poof
blokes.

You could beat a Vitara, by blinding it with all the oil smoke pouring out.
Or they'd be laughing too hard at it struggling to climb over small rocks.
Or the special button to make it 4WD would stop working.

It doesn't have a "button", it has a transfer case. A *real* one that
doesn't need any bullshit front hubs that drive through a fragile gearbox
synchro ring.

Does your Vitara have side mounted rope handles? Just wondering what people

Yes, it doesn't mind falling over occasionally, it's used to it. Unlike that
hopeless thing lying down on the beach in those photos! Vitey wouldn't be

Mine hasn't got stuck yet, in fact it's been used to pull other cars and
trucks that have.

Still, I'm highly unlikely to ever take it anywhere where it would.

Err. speaking of sheep-skin (no, not trying to attract Atec to this
thread:-))
They make an absolute ripper floor-mat for use under the drivers
accelerator foot heel.
Really.
Hours of driving will often cause trouble for the right heel.
Sheep-skin under that heel removes the problem.
Also very good for using when beach driving, the wool takes the sand
away from the feet.

True. They ruined mine with those things. Makes it very hard to clean (so I
generally don't).

Did put rubber mats over the carpet though, so cleaning often just means
pulling out the mats and giving them a flap.

Many years ago, I had to "repair" the two-way radio in a proper 4WD.
The guys were complaining that it didn't work and they didn't
understand why until I explained that hosing out the interior might be
quick, but the radio bolted to the floor under the passenger seat
wasn't water proof and was now full of mud and water, hence causing
their radio problems. Not that they cared - after 2 years (from
band-spanking new), 90% had only one straight panel; the roof!

Is there really one? I was just making that up :)

In all seriousness, the 380 may or may not be a good car, but I think laying
out your hard-earned for one now is a very bad idea. The company is in
*deep* trouble, and the value of the things is bound to be drastically
reduced in the very near future.

Saos are all right (although they are full of sugar but pretend not to be)
but Gaiety are boring. I've spent the week learning how to suck up coffee

Yep, like Saos (for reasons below).

I'm not really into anything sweet or sugar, so I must be the most
blokey person here :-p  If it can't be dunked in hot chilli sauce,
wasabi, mint source, soy sauce - or have salt poured all over it,
I'm not interested :-) I even pour chilli sauce on me Dorito chips.

Hot sauce (yanks make all kinds of it) is great, although awful with mint
slices.

there's some very good chilli sauce you can get at most supermarkets in the
Asian bit, called Sriracha or something (has a rooster on it).  Very hot
garlicky sauce (more like a thick tabasco than the see-through sweet stuff),
and very yummy.

Maybe it's just me, but I can't see anything "stupid" in that all. In fact,
I'd go so far as to suggest that it's *excellent* advice for anyone
contemplating a new mid-sized car and the 380 is on their list.

It's very likely *certain*, that MMAL is going to go c.nt up before very
long, and when they do you can bet both your nuts and your freckle that the
value of 380's will die with them. Buying a new 380 now would be a *very*
stupid thing to do.

Just like buying one before the price slashing was....

I'll, do a deal with you. If Mitsubishi is still trying to sell cars,
Australian designed, in a years time, I'll agree on this group that your
assessment of me was right,...if not,..I get to call you an idiot :-)

I take no pleasure in the prediction about the 380. The demise of Mitsubishi
in the family car stakes is nothing short of a tragic.
