No real known mechanical problem for this car, but it is a bit thirstier on
fuel than the current 3.5 litre model and also the 3 litre model before
2001.

Nissan maxima is well known for its responsive and yet very efficient V6
engine.
But the new 3.5 litre V6 is more fuel efficient than 2001-2003 3 litre V6 in
most
cases the newer car can easily use 1-1.5  litre less per 100 km in mix cycle
driving.
Both cars run on premium unleaded.

Yes, you can run normal ULP but the power output and fuel efficiency will
suffer.
You will probably find  the fuel economy goes up to 13 to 14 litres
per 100 kilometer running ULP as oppose to 12-13 using PULP.  From 2000
all Nissan Maximas are designed to run best with premium unleaded which is
one reason I still very much like the old 1999 Maxima I used to own because
it is
more powerful than today's souped up 4 cylinder cars like Honda Euro or
Mazda 6
but run on ULP and has similar fuel economy to today's 4 cylinder cars.

So fuel costs per kilometre will be no different if you use 98ron or 92. No?
