NZ gets WAAAAAY more models available to the public as they dont have a
f.cked up car industry (In the eyes of the public that is) so anything goes
as long as its passed basic criteria. The NZ ADRs dont discriminate against
imports so nice twin turbo Legacys in B Spec and Godzilla Nissans are common
place.
BTW A nice Subaru Legacy can be bought for around $12K, here the same
Liberty (In lower spec) would be about $20K plus on roads (Which isnt a huge
issue in NZ as it is here, fricken stamp duty , WTF is that for!?)

The theory goes that stamp duty was introduced to cover the cost of
transferring the rego into your name and that sort of thing - so it's
like your "bureaucracy fee".
Of course, there's no way that writing your name on the rego papers can
cost 3% of your car's value - and no logical reason for there being
more bureaucracy to pay for the more your car is worth - so it's a tax
on car sales, pure and simple.

Which is why there is often an attempt buy the counters tax taker to
talk the value up , if I pay 2k for a car I am not going to pay tax on
what it is worth now... ( the mainline cost 2k in bits and on rego was
worth considerably more)
