Firmer ride? responsive handling? You have GOT to be kidding! I have
driven two near-new ones and they both wallowed like pigs in quicksand!
I shudder at what *other* American cars must be like, then.

That's pretty typical for an Amercian car though :)

You want to try something like a Caddy. Smooth as silk in a straight line,
but you almost have to stop and push them around corners :)

they'd suit the average australian city driver down to the ground then.
Oooh! A CURVE! I can't go fast, and must stand on the brake! I must
complain. It's not fair.

I hired one of those things in Portland (Oregon) and thrashed its c.nt out
for two weeks. The best feature of the car by far was the Hertz GPS
navigation system which enabled me to drive around without getting badly
lost.
It handled kind of OK and there wasn't too much body roll in corners. It was
actually pleasant cruising at 70mph. The brakes faded very easily though
and the engine was gutless. The build quality was like our Fords and
Holdens from the 80s.

Actually, the acceleration on the ones I had wasn't THAT bad, but I know
what you mean about the brakes. And the transmission! You could read a
whole page of the owner's manual while it changed between gears. And why
are they STILL building cars with colomn-shifts?
Yes, the best feature IS the GPS unit. Trying to navigate the Bay Area
without it would have been suicide.

for one, they don't need to have a centre console on budget models
Cops love them(column shifts that is) because they can cram more sh.t in
between the seats
you can still have a bench seat
most people don't want a column shift but there are still plenty about
that do
