Government spends $2.6m promoting LPG in cars

The federal government has spent more than $2.6 million trying to convince
Australians to switch their cars to LPG.

In response to a question on notice, Industry Minister Ian Macfarlane said
that, as of September 19, the government had spent just over $2.6 million
advertising its LPG conversion program in newspapers and on radio.

There had been no television ads promoting the scheme, he said.

Beneficiaries of the advertising splurge included the Eden Imlay Magnet, the
Wee Waa News, the Mortlake Dispatch, the Dimboola Banner and the Pittsworth
Sentinel, along with the major metropolitan newspapers.

The government also took its message to the airwaves, advertising on radio
stations in capital cities and regional centres.

The scheme gives motorists a $2000 subsidy to convert petrol vehicles to
LPG, in an effort to ease the impact of high oil prices and encourage
alternative fuels.

The $2.6 million is only a fraction of what they will get back when they put
excise on LPG
LPG will go from around 45¢ to somewhere around 85¢ a litre,
thereby giving JH and cronies an added bonus of 40¢ a litre to play with
and with petrol at $1.08 a litre now, where is the value in changing?

Err.  12.5c/L excise.  Assume that they add GST on top of that (as they
obviously will) and it's 13.75c/L.  Add that to 45c/L and you get 58.75c/L
not 85c/L.

Mind you, if you add it to the current price here of 56c/L, it's going to
come to about 70c/L - what I paid last time I was in Narrabri.

You go on believing that.  Maybe it'll slow down the number of morons
converting.  :-)
