Forgot which one of you claim to be in the know with the folks at MMAL.

However, my question is: when will MMAL release the upgraded 380 that
incorporates 6 airbags and stability control, to counter the likes of
Holden, Ford, Toyota, Hyundai, Kia?  By times time next year?

Does all that sh.t make you fell safe? Let's see some crash tests where
the car is run up the rear.

It should do, stability control alone is nothing short of f.cking brilliant.

You don't think they test rear impact?

8 km/h into a pole or pillar doesn't count.
Any link to high speed rear impact testing?

It's not a priority when only 5% of fatalities are from rear impacts.

While that may be so, I'm still feeling the effects of a rear
impact I suffered from in 1990. In an XD Falcon, hit in the rear by
a car doing around 60kph, seat broke, spine bent in a unique
way.

At the time, stopped me from playing a number of sports that
I was very good at and still causes discomfort at times to this
day.

Cheers,
Rod.

Yep, sure, but things have come quite a way since the XD days.

Lots of info for fuel system integrity.
I'd like to see a 380 hit by another 380 from behind with a full load of
dummies, tested at 60 km/h or better by Mitsubishi. Link please.

At 8kph they test for zero damage. They test actual accidents much faster
than that.

$3K damage during testing at 8 km/h rolled into a pole is zero damage?
Have you ever been in an 'actual accident', hit from the rear?
You will find airbags or traction control will not be of assistance.

It's primarily about occupant safety, not reducing repair costs.

Possibly because the crash physics are completely different for reverse
impacts.

Since 95 of fatalities occur from front and side impacts I am happy that
they make those type of impacts a priority.

This crash test has no mention of the vehicle being struck from behind at
speed whilst stationary.
http://www.howsafeisyourcar.com.au/_scripts/ancap_detail.php?IID=3928

I have my own pictures from 1981, the CTD was me. Do the seats still rip
from their adjuster, does the seat strip it's reclining adjustment, do
you still miss the headrest altogether if you are leaning forward looking
left waiting for traffic to clear, can your body break a steel support
in the seat. These questions and more remain unanswered and would a new
car be any safer in this type of impact than an old car or similar
weight?
I'm sure you would be shocked to see what happens to a stationary vehicle
when struck at 60 km/h from behind. They obviously don't want you to
know.

Athol - 31 Oct 2006 00:57 GMT

> Any link to high speed rear impact testing?

I am not aware of any country in the world that has a crash standard for
the rear of a vehicle.  This is, in part, because the legislators are
told that the load in the rear of the vehicle will affect the way that it
crumples.  Hence the 5MPH "bumper bar damage" type tests but nothing
bigger.

Interestingly, ADR 10 (the ADR for collapsible steering columns) does not
cover cab/chassis vehicles because front crumple might be affected by the
body fitted...  Possibly a concession to bodies that extend forward over
the cab, including many motorhome bodies.

Somewhere, I have footage from the NBC Today show of 5MPH comparisons
between 2 years of small hatchback (Honda, I think) from when that rule
was introduced in the USA.  The older vehicle had enough intrusion to
bend the floor and the tailgate, shattering the tailgate glass.  The
newer model just bounced.  Externally, they looked identical.

Actually no.
Last time I spoke to him a few weeks back, he was off to Japan to
finalise some details about the new models to be released in Oz next
year.

Before that it was something to do with building a car for Nissan in
the Asian market...

Yeah, I expect the import side of the business is about to improve
dramatically.

Why?
Are you expecting them to suddenly start importing a car that you
actually like?
Gonna buy a few thousand are you?

Hardly. There's nothing they currently make that would find it's way onto my
wish list. However, once they kill local production they might actually
import something that people want for a change.

> You have no idea, period!

Oh yeah, I do.

MMAL should just simply avoid any further embarrassment and close.

First thing Monday morning.

Probably met em at the pub, since they're only working 4 hour weeks to
meet current customer demand for their cars. Or at social security.
