My wifes 1995 VS commodore broke down on Sunday. RACV guy traced it to a
stuffed regulator on the back of the alternator. Long story short, got the
replacement part, after originally being given the completely wrong part,
and as I pulled out the old one, I noticed some sparking on the contacts. I
decided it would be a good idea to disconnect the battery when I
re-installed the new part. Everything is now working again, only, the
stereo needs a code! I've been through all the documentation I received
when I bought the car 6 months ago (bought it privately) and the code isn't
listed anywhere. Not even written in the user manual like it is in my AU
Falcon. Is there a way to get the code without spending $80? You'd almost
be better off spending $60 extra and putting in a CD player than spend $80
to get the code for the factory tape deck! $80 is not something I can
afford right now, being Christmas!
Thanks for any help,
Oz Lander

Contact your local Holden dealer , they SHOULD give the number to you
for nothing , take a copy of the registration .

Many stereos can have the code function removed, I dont know why they code
the standard units as they are usually a POS. Ask Holden and they should
provide for free, if not try other Holden dealers around, or just wait and
buy a new unit in  the new year.

Give me your VIN and I'll provide you with the correct code :-)

I would have thought the others would know this by now!

Why do Holden even bother code thier radios, the stock units are usually far
from desirable.

Agreed, I suspect they are making a long term income stream for recoding
keys and providing pins for radios. Hopefully some technology will make it
all useless.

How is Holden making money out of providing radio PINs and coding keys?

The same reason the "No Name" and "Sound4" el cheapo $40 stereos from
Supa Cheap have such fantastic security as removable front plates and
key codes

cause the last thing you want is someone knocking off your top of the
range "sound4" stereo out of your rusted top of the range VB SL/E
commonscore with the peeled paint brock kit fitted

have you ever noticed that the top of the range units rarely have security
coding or removable faces.  Any unit if installed correctly will be bloody
difficult to get out. **Two trains of thought here: 1.would you rather that
someone got the unit out with stuffing the dash or 2. Secure it so well that
they cant get it out and possible wreck you dash while trying.

When I was installing car audio a few years ago we were asked to install a
high end head unit in a Corrolla, I bolt that sucker in really well as per
owners instructions and about a month or so later he came back with a
COMPLETELY wrecked dash. As they couldnt get the unit out they slashed every
part of the dash board in frustration.  $3000 bill later. They did manage to
get the Amp out though.

Ever costed a genuine standard replacement head unit?

There would be a market for stolen factory units, I assure you.

Umm yeah, the price is absolute thieft!  For the same price you can get a
very decent aftermarket unit which brings me to the same issue, why bother
with the standard unit.  I had to reinstall a factory tape deck for a 1992
318 BMW, it cost the insurance company around $1200 due to the fact that the
owner wanted to keep it stock. After we finished the job we took him into
the workshop to listen to a $1200 system which we had just stuck into a
Mitsi, he wa sblown away and tried his hardest to go back but we couldnt
return the BMW unit.  He did come back after 6 months and spent $2k on a
nice system.  He was very quiet about his prior mistake.

A lot of people are happy with the genuine system, in particular those that
aren't your typical doof doof w.nkers who think volume compensates for sound
quality.

Volume/Power output is irrelevant in a quality system. One of the best that
I installed had a 6 channel amp running 10Watts by 4 plus 2x40 which was
mono'd to 100x1 for a nice 10Inch Infinity Sub.

Sounded bloody nice, pity that it was in a 323 Hatch back though.

You're a licenced installer of car sound?

Oz1...of the 3 twins.

I welcome you to crackerbox palace,
We've been expecting you.

No licence required at the time.
And as far as I know there still isnt, unless your installing a unit with
Blue tooth or mobile phones.

Not so Kev, theres always a way to change systems to a better one, just
needs a bit of imagination and some fabrication skills.

I have legitimate access to the Holden system.

Does this mean the PIN is stored in the ECU or is it in the radio? I've had
a radio swapped out for a CD equipped unit and surprise, surprise.....exact
same PIN.

Well depends on what model. Later models had the PIN in the BCM and if it
didn't match the one of the radio you fitted it just wouldn't work.

VX and earlier have the code in the BCM, but doesn't use that code so you
can install any head unit as long as you have the code for the radio.
The BCM code is merely for convenience and should be updated if the head
unit is replaced.
