My friend told me that a Lexus is really a Toyota because Lexus is
owned by Toyota.

Also, is a Jaguar really just a Ford? Is a Ferrari really just a Fiat?

Is an HSV really a Holden?
Is a Nova really a Holden?
Is an Lexen a Toyota?
Is a FPV a Ford?

Toyota is the parent company but Lexus is a manufacturer in its own right
even if they use Toyota parts.

In the US, it's marketed as such. That Lexus is a luxury brand that's
isolated from Toyota. I think Accura for Honda is the same.

Watching the show "24" the other night, one of the characters jumps into
a vehicle with Lexus badges. If I didn't know better, I would have sworn
that it was a current model 100 series Landcruiser...

Yeah, the Lexus LX470.  You can buy one here too, if you like.

And that statement speaks of Aus car prices in general.

Lexus also rebadge the Prado as the GX470.

The real Land Cruiser is the Lexus LX470, the Prado is the RX350 and RX400h.

No, the Highlander (Kluger) is the RX350.  The Prado is the GX470 with the
4.7L VVTi V8, only sold in North America.

I hear many people making fun of Lexus drivers who apparently own
Toyotas, but when you look at the corporate structure of every car
manufacturers, pretty much everyone owns everyone. It's one giant
mess. Carmakers need to diversify across markets and so it actually
makes sense to own not only have a stake in luxury cars but also
economy cars. Everyone does it, not just Toyota but also Fiat, Audi,
GM, and Ford. It just seems as if the Lexus owners are being bullied
about this but not, say, Ferrari owners or Lamborghini owners. You
hardly hear anyone go up to a Mercedes driver and say, "Your Merc is
just a Chrysler" or go up to a Holden (GM) owners and say, "Your
Holden is a Daewoo."

Toyota Prado is Lexus GX. The RX is the crossover Lexus, which has no
Toyota equivalent.

Yes.  Jap Domestic models of what we see here badged Lexus are in fact Toyotas and badged that way to prove it, even if some Toyotas are sold with a Golf Club membership and free f.cks and coffee for the warranty period.

> Also, is a Jaguar really just a Ford?

Yes - for now.
These is some argument about Legendary_Jaguar_Reliability Vs Legendary_Ford_Reliability, of course, with spirited competition between the divisions in achieving firstly the greatest earnings for dealers working on warranty claims, and secondly for spare parts sales.
That spare parts competition is in *number* of parts incidentally, to level the internal playing field somewhat due the traditional MonsterGougePrices favoured by Jaguar dealers.
(Apologies to all for using Ford, Jaguar and Reliability in the same post - I attempted to camouflage that but the alert will notice, I guess - but I'm trying to make a point, here.)

Of course Benchmark Land Rover has the title overall, no matter who owns it this week.

Considering the people that own Lexus vehicles drive them just like a
Toyota (i.e. well under the speed limit and snail pace acceleration), for
all practical purposes Lexus = Toyota.

A friend of mine drives a Lexus and my brother, a Commodore driver,
told him that his Lexus really was a Toyota because Lexus and Toyota
are in the same family.

The friend replied and said that my brother's Commodore was really a
Daewoo.

Makes me wonder whether all this talk about car x being car y makes any
sense because with the pace of mergers nowadays all this is probably
irrelevant.

In the case of Lexus and Toyota, Toyota is the parent company who made a
distinct decision to launch a premium version of the brand, which they
named Lexus.  Mazda did the same with a company called Eunos.
Basically Lexus get access to the Toyota expertise and support
structure.

Effectively, therefore, a Lexus is a well made, upmarket Toyota.  BUT,
when you buy a Lexus, your $$ ends up with Toyota, so effectively a
Lexus IS a Toyota.  Bear in mind that the Lexus brand is targetted
towards people who value brand name, which is why they aren't called
Toyota.

Thing is, the quality of Toyota and Lexus products are fairly
comparable.

So too are that of Holden and Daewoo...

I suppose it depends on where you draw the line.  Are Lexus models
designed and built by the same people who also design and build
Corollas and Camrys, or is it for all intents and purposes a separate
marque?  Given that it was started by Toyota (as opposed to being
bought by them a la Jaguar with Ford), you would think that they would
all come out of the same design/development and manufacturing centres
and that Lexus would be totally integrated into the Toyota design and
manufacturing process.

Does that matter?  Probably not, Toyota build top quality cars that are
well up to the standard of the luxury brands and probably only had to
invent the Lexus brand because people weren't going to cop a $100k
Toyota no matter what.

Some of the other examples are a bit different - Jaguar, as I
understand it, still designs and builds its own cars but taps into the
Ford world for expertise (and for somewhere to direct the flow of red
ink to).  Same is true of the various brands that Fiat owns, GM with
Saab, and so on.  Whether that matters or not is up to you, but I don't
think it does personally unless for some reason luxury car buyers can't
stand the idea of their new Jaguar being built with lots of Ford parts.
(Given the sales failure of the X-Type, maybe there is something in
that theory).

You only have to look at the Lexus models
the old 300 series was a Camry body
The LX470 is a Landcruiser
there are other overseas models we don't get like the older Toyota
Sourer and the LS400, same two door car body
but that is where the similarities stop
The Lexus vehicles run different engines/drivelines(mostly) and
trim(interior & exterior) which I would guess are completed on a
different production line

I am sure Nissan did the same thing as Toyota and Mazda, but we never
saw any of their cars here, though I have seen a few imports that look
like Nissans but not called Nissan or datsun

The Infiniti (Nissan) Q45 luxury sedan was sold here from 93 to 97.
Not many were actually sold and was short lived in Australia.

That's the name
I have seen a couple of imports with the Infiniti badges
but different model names

There's been a few different ones sold in the US, but I think in Japan
they're sold as Nissans - AFAIK the Infiniti brand is only used in the
US now and are basically rebadged Nissans (eg. the Skyline is the G35
or V35 over in the US).
