Getting an unregistered car on the road (qld)

What legal options do I have. I need to get a car, which is in perfect health , from my brothers house to the RWC inspection center and thence on to mains roads to register it (brothers rego expired last month, I am registering it in my name) . The mains road site I am finding a little hard to navigate at sub-dialup speeds, so if anyone could offer advice I'd appreciate it. Do I need a receipt from my brother to show transfer of ownership ?
Can I legally drive to the RWC inspection center if I have a 3rd party cover note from my CTP insurer ? I am pretty sure that I am allowed to drive directly from the RWC center to mains roads (even without a 3rd party cover note) - is this correct ?
Any othere red tape I need to be aware of ? When I get it to mains roads the check the compliance pplate vin etc I assume and that's about it ?

You will need any sort of receipt for the car, or transfer papers signed by him, which you could do after its registered again.

I think I replaced a 10th of that car and left it a lot lighter.

They cost (or at least the last time I got one anyway) about $30. To get one you need to have 3rd party insurance cover - not all insurers will do this, after all by definition the vehicle is unregistered/unroadworthy, but ring around and you will get one.
From memory you can get one that extends for a few days, you have to nominate where you will be taking the vehicle and draw a rough route on a "mud-map".
Expect to be the target of any prowling polce car, expect also that the coppers will not know the fine detaisl of a permit to move and they may considerably delay you whilst they find out.
All in all it is a bloody side simpler to hire/borrow a car trailer.
Or if you have a friend in the new or used vehicle game, borrow their trade plate.

The big day came - all I needed was CTP and a registration application (downloadable) filled out and dated. Don't need a 'permit to move' for a direct trip to get roadworthy/rego - only need a 'permit to move' if moving to somewhere else, for instance to get mechanical repairs or from point of purchase back to your house.
Was targeted by 2 prowling police cars on a 10min trip (bundamba to darra on ipswich motorway QLD) one unmarked black mtisi 380 and a labelled sv8. Both looked relieved when I waved the paperwork at them, both wanted to see the address of the inspection centre I was headed for and the CTP certificate.

Not having plates is usually enough to get attention Ron, the lack of plates is very noticeable so the cops don't even have to try to spot it. If it was in Melb I'd say getting Police attention for anything is difficult because seeing cops on the roads is rare.

Around here, people do occasionally get stopped but if they have a good explaination it's not a problem. I even occasionally get phone calls from RTA inspectors to confirm that a heavy vehicle has an appointment.
For some reason, the police don't make similar calls for light vehicles. They just seem to accept the driver's word.

I'm very impressed with the new NSW registration cameras. Auto-detect the front numberplate of every vehicle in a traffic stream, do a rego check including intelligence on possible occupants with outstanding warrants, drug couriers, etc, and notify a bunch of cops further down the road on which ones to stop.
Combine cops operating those cameras, RBT, the NSW government's massive reduction in the number of HWP and reliance upon fixed speed cameras and it's rare to see HWP virtually anywhere else.

I've noticed a sign at t'local car park that your rego plate will be scanned.
I'm a little worried about your "big brother" take on it though.

Absolute factory - down to the hub caps '93 323 astina. It was just the missing plates. Ironically, had I left the old plates on (not legal) I'd have not been pulled over.

AFAIK would still have to take it for safety certificate and have permit to drive it there for a day or so plus insurance and present the vehicle to QT for inspection of engine number etc... and then in my case they registered it as a wagon instead of a ute and I had to go back and fill out another form, explaining to them, it hasn't been modified, it's always been a ute.. oh must be clerical error they said, then get demand to pay rego on vehicle we used to have (with a warning not to drive it unregistered) even though I'd handed in the plates months before and it had gone to the scrap yard. Rang QT this morning.
Need to arrange CTP prior to picking it up. Need to download and fill out form http://www.transport.qld.gov.au/resources/file/eb75120bb3478da/pdf_f3518_es.pdf (application for registration) Need Bill of sale.
With these documents in the car, completed and signed, I can drive from my brothers house, to the inspection centre and then on to mains roads via a direct route and with no deviations.
Any expired plates and rego sticker must be removed, and no doubt this wll make me something of a cop magnet, but the aforementioned paperwork, if in order, will sort that all out.
As atec suggests - a mobile inspector would simplify matters, and driving to mains roads is no problem if ctp is arranged and the application for reg is completed (shows intend I suppose?)
