I love the look of convertables,
not sure what I'll be able to afford, If I sell my mazda 2 that would
give me about $15k (ish)
would prefer auto if possible.
any ideas?

What you need is an old Landrover, Landcruiser or Sierra with a Bikini top
that just covers from the windscreen to your head, then you get natrual A/c
on 3 sides and are even ok in light to medium rain too. :)

reminds me of this single guy in his 50's who had two Sierra's and old
model and a new 2001 model.
He used to drive the old one around every day down to the shop etc,but
the bingo on sunday,he would gently warm up and back the new one out of
the shed, pop the top off,and polish it to a gleam...making sure it was
perfect,he then went and got his best cloths on then every so carfully
pulled out into the street and slowly drove round the town, pulling in to
vist the odd person.

Every Sunday, and the odd Saturday he folowed this ritual, always knowing
how to look right out of place.

It was an eyesore....

Well I was going to suggest a Nissan EXA and an Angle grinder, but your
solution sounds better :-)

Hmm...was fixing one of these the other day ripping interior parts off
,the owner decided it was time to play with the T top roof section, there
for a minute sitting in the car I almost swore he had just broken a hole
in the roof, when he dropped the roof section by mistake onto the gravel
road...lol

Several choices , some faggy hair dressers thing , an older yank tank on
gas or maybe a targa top 300 zx or similar .
They are fun to drive for a while , but open to theft the weather and
cant be parked reliably in public places  without returning to a theft.

Think about it a bit. When I had a convertible (well a targa top) I
found that I only had it open about once a month if that. The rest of
the time it was too hot, or too wet, or too polluted.

Before anyone points it out, yes I am a wimp.

Probably couldn't go past an MX5 for that money, if you were looking
for something relatively modern.  The second-gen NB series might be
approaching that price by now.  The only other relatively new options
would be something like a Saab convertible or a Pug 306 convertible,
both of which at least in my view scream 'w.nker' :)

If you're prepared to go a little older, then I agree with everyone
here who has suggested a big Yank convertible with equally massive V8.

There was a Holden Vectra or Astra(can't remember which) Convertable or
Cabriolet a few years ago
maybe one of those
and old BMW 3 series, seen a couple of those getting about
a 280Z or 300Z nissan(only in Targa top)would be ok as well

But for a good and popular(even if it was mostly hairdressers) would be
the Mazda MX5

Agree, but I don't know how you'd go in getting any of the above for
$15k other than maybe an early 90s 3 series.  It was an Astra
convertible, btw.

Come to think of it, there was also a Barina convertible but that was
little more than a 3 door Barina with the back half of the roof
chopped off by HSV or similar, and I can't imagine why you'd want one.

Yep, I'd agree with just about everything you've said.  The only thing
about the Saab or Pug options, though, is that at least you get a
relatively reliable and easy to live with (compared to the old Yank
alternative) 4 seater.  And I'm guessing the OP isn't going to be
driving it "enthusiastically", given the suggested auto box - which
seems a waste of a good MX5, IMHO.

You know, you'd probably get a grey import Toyota Celica drop-top of
mid-90's vintage for that money - ridiculously reliable and easy to
get most parts for.  $15k will probably get you a convertible BMW E30
3 series, too, which would be nice.

MGB's are around those dollars - but not for an auto, which is:
a.  Horribly rare &
b.  Horrible.

Aside from actual suggestions, to the original poster (and anyone else
who cares about my opinion) I say this:  As someone who uses a
convertible every day, I think it's something that EVERYONE should do
at least once in their lives.  Nothing puts a smile on the dial like a
nice cruise with the roof down.  Except a hard fang with the roof
down.  :)
