This is for clockmeister,

What service costs are envolved in the timing belt/water pump service? Not
keen to be ripped off!

I think the car is worth buying but my GF is cautious as per usual! :-)

Cheers

I'll get some retail prices on Monday for you for doing the belt, pump,
tensioner and labour which should give you some idea what you will be up
for.

Thanks heaps. The vehicle inspection we just had done on it shows some noise
from the cam belt/timing cover area and we're trying to get the dealer to do
it before we pick it up. The dealer doesn't think it's required, but as it's
got 52000k's on it I would rather be safe than sorry.

It's also got some corrosion around the rear muffler.

Other than that, a tidy vehicle.

Cheers

Is it too late to make it a condition of sale?
Dan - 02 Apr 2007 07:02 GMT
It was all pending the NRMA inspection but I guess it's a little vague as to
what that means. I guess we can pull out if we want and get a refund of our
deposit but the better half is keen on the car. If I can get them to do the
work I'd be happy, but I'm not sure how successful I'll be at getting them
to wear the cost.

They are offering a 3 year warrantly if we service the car there too but
we're thinking of bining that idea and getting it service where we know so
they don't try and rip us off!

Ok, I've got some retail prices for you. Be aware that these prices can
differ significantly depending on who does the work.

Timing belt and pulley kit (includes tensioner and all idlers as well as the
belt itself)
Genuine $313.30
Non-Gen $290

Waterpump
Genuine $225.35
Non-Gen $170

Gasket
$6.90

Coolant
$50

Labour
~4 hours at whatever they charge. A Holden dealer that would be around $100
an hour.

Not cheap, glad I can do mine myself and with significantly cheaper parts
because I'm working in the trade ;-)

Sounds about right, the last timing belt I did on mine cost about $700
or so, although I never had to replace the water pump.

And people say Honda's are expensive, my son bought a 1988 Prelude very
cheap because it had a broken timing belt (a mechanic told the female
owner the car was not worth fixing because the engine was "severely
damaged"), a new genuine T belt cost $40.00, we replaced the crankshaft
and cams seals, fitted the new belt and the engine runs perfectly:-)

Well,

Here's a good news story!

The dealer has agreed to do the whole thing (belt, tensioner, idler and
water pump) before we pick it up! Without any real pushing from us at all!!
yee haaa

We should be taking delivery tomorrow, they were just waiting on parts this
morning. Just in time for the Easter long weekend. (will have to go for a
drive now)

Dealer is Phil Gilbert Toyota in Homebush NSW and our experience has been
pretty good so far. I'll keep you posted if we get raped with the serviceing
costs!! haha

For interest sake I rang the local Holden dealer, they quoted me $560 for
the belt service (tensioners and idler as well) and an extra $260 to do the
water pump!

Cheers

Not too much change from $1000 if they do the whole lot. Then again when the
other half's went, they had to replace the pulleys etc as well. That was for
timing belt, water pump etc. Stupid mech who just did the belt the service
before failed to recognise what a dodgey water pump sounded like.
