Just wondering, because I've spent lunchtime reading some reviews of
the Lotus Europa S, but I get the impression I probably won't fit into
one :) But has anyone driven one, and are they as much fun as they
sound?

If they are as lowset as the original Lotus Europa from the 60's, you'd have
to be a contortionist to get in/out i'd reckon lol

I've driven (and worked on) a couple of Esprit turbo's and a Europa, and I
thought they were pretty average myself. Typically poorly built English car
with virtually no thought at all given to ergonomics and comfort, unreliable
and not all that spectacular in the horsepower department.
On the plus side, they handled & stopped pretty well, and I didn't own them
:)
I would plunk them in the same basket as most Astons: Nice to look at, but I
wouldn't own one if you held a gun to my head.

Many years ago a mate of a mate owned one of the original Europa's, both
the owner and my mate were very tall (mate is 6'8"), getting in and
out of the car was very difficult, "you don't get into a Lotus, you put
it on" is a common description:-)
I'm in charge of my mates Lotus 7 for the next 3 weeks whilst he's
overseas, the car was built with the idea that only 2 of us were ever
going to drive it, he is slightly taller than me and I'm about 5'6" so
circus freaks haven't a hope of getting in it let alone drive it.
As for being fun it was faster than a couple of Porsche's and a Ferrari
around Phillip Island 2 weeks ago, a 2min 2 sec lap and 215kph on the
front straight isn't too slack for a na 2.0lt 4cyl driven by a 53 yr old
who only started racing recently.

Pfft circus freaks indeed its common courtesy to be tall as me so some of
the ladies don't dirty their knees when they are knob polishing.

Apparently they are extremely fun cars to drive I always liked the Esprit
but there was f.ck all chance for me to fit into it. Again being tall does
have its bad points as such.

I doubt it , just give em some of this translucent powder shite they
all seem to be eating
You have to wonder if a good time is made better by being so ripped
the young ones offer things they can't back up.

LOL, one of my sons friends is named Elyse (spelt something like that),
I don't know if she handles well or is a "good bang" but she is a head
turner like a Lotus:-)

I think you would fit.
Mate of mine who is a Lotus freak, said these new Europe are sh.t,
typical Proton stuff up.He is going to get a 2nd hand Esprit instead.
He LOVES the brand, God for him, to hate it must be a pox?
For around the same amount you can get a new Cayman.Thats a proper
sports car

FFS, Marco, just go and drive one! :-)
Guys, in case you hadn't worked it out, he's talking about the new
one, the stretched out Elise, not the old Europa.
I've watched Elises (Elii? ;-) ) through that S bend at Winton, where
the new start straight meets the old one, and they didn't look like
that quick - until you saw them eat up other cars through there. It
took the passing move to show just how composed they were through
there. Everything else was obviously throwing weight back and forth
(even other sportscars) but the Elise could just get through like it
was a Sunday drive. Bastards. :-)
Cheers,
Steve

LOL...and who the hell is going to lend me one to take for a spin? My
nearest Lotus dealer is 350km away :)

Yep, that's the one I'm talking about. Having said that, the reviews
I read didn't sound all that positive and they pretty much all
suggested that a Porsche Cayman would be a better car for that money.
(When you consider that the Europa S is $109k, you do have to ask
serious questions about whether it's worth it....)

That's what I love about Lotuses - the whole 'handling is paramount'
philosophy that leads to lightweight everything and bare minimum
design. But I do think they charge too much money when they basically
give you bugger all. I suppose lightweight materials cost more, but
still...
