For me with a trainees pay,..there was more than one. but the worst by far
was a Morris Major Elite (1963model). It was f.cked and I didnt know it.
Hence started my engine training or lay-persons anyhoo.

In the yard, with it idling, there was a constant stream of smoke shooting
upwards outa the oil-hole. I soon learned what that meant. Broke a piston at
70 mph (close to flat throttle) on way to Canberra. Gudgeon still held top
of piston,..made it home, but not before the disintegrating piston put alloy
swarf thru the oil-galleries. The engine slowly died from bearing failure
after that.

Then the diff hemisphere cracked and then broke. Crown-wheel punched a hole
thru the diff housing. Tried to get all the metal outa the diff with a
magnet,..nogo,..more blown diffs after that.

BMC blues,...Jason

Ha ha...these are great cars...lol.
I have 3 of them all elites, have a 1769cc OHC VC Mazda and gearbox in
one,but has the blown diff.

Biggest sh.t box I have owned is a;
1991 Falcon EA Wagon Auto,I did use this as a subcontracting vehicle and
I did know it was going to fall to bits, however it was the most
expensive to fix car I have owned.
She had over 1 million KM on the clock, and had been overhauled bye a
panel beater, who rounded all the bolts and put auto bodge kit through it.
Not only did he bodge the auto oil pan gasket,he forgot to replace the
rear seal.
She leaked for weeks.
Got a new seal, popped out the tailshaft popped in the seal, and must have
pushed the silly inner bush into the box,got 100km and it had slogged
the tailshaft and gear box housing to the sh.tter.
Went chasing a new housing,it was the end of the world.
I had to get a new gearbox or get an entire secound had one as ford did
no longer make the housing and no-one would seperate from a box.
Endless days of hunting,$350,$450 for a box and tailshaft, half the time
I had to remove them from the car aswell.
Eventually after 3 months I found a good auto box and tailshaft end for
$150 no hassle,even got a reciept...lol
Put the f.cking housing in and she leaked between the housing and
box,and still dripped out the tailshaft rear seal.
I gave up,and just decided instead of tring to sell this thing,I would
drive her into the ground, just topping her with oil as needed.
The last work she did was two the Ford Thames Flat Truck, with no oil in
the auto,which finally f.cked her...thank f.ck.
I have the good auto, but now she is froozen into history with seized
injectors.
Aswell as this it had a miss, and was not untill I found how to read the
ECU that I had anyidea what its problem was.
Had out the fuel pump, put it back and it leaked fuel, parked in the shed
she leaked over 20litre a night, untill i could get a new fuel pump
gasket, heard later one must put a new one in every time the pump is removed.
Cost me $50 for a set of leads as well, cheapest leads I have ever bought
oddly enough.
f.ck this car cost me some f.cking around.

About to take the diff and try to fit it to the Morris major Elite.
have to chance the spring mounts a bit.

Mum bought me my first car,I was lucky,it was not a shitbox. It was a
Mazda...lol

The reason they went thru axles and diffs was because the diff was the same
as the Morry 1000,..they just put a taller ratio in it. Horsepower of
Major=60hp,..Morry 1000 around 35-40,..with no "headroom" in design
strength, a disaster waiting to happen.

I used to be able to pick the cracked skirt noise in A60s and other
majors,..a loud clicking noise when acellerating, then the skirt would
eventually parted company. Massive blow-by = overheated piston= quick demise
at high throttle.

That happened to my major as well. Front uni cross-pegs were
oval,..needle -rollers fell out yonks before. Rear g/box bush was chopped
out, seal f.cked as well. All this before I parted with hard-earned $$$s

These moments usually occur at 11.20pm,..train/bus tomorrow.

That qualifies as a shitbox :)

The Elite (1628cc) wasn't that bad looking for its time,..I still shudder
when I see one tho. The previous Major (1500cc) had an SU carby,..much
better than the poxxy Solex which warped at the base (2 bolt alloy base) and
introduced an air-leak which helped f.ck the valves. Eventually worked that
out after driving around with the choke on to keep it going. Used our nice
flat cement footpath to scrape the base flat again.

Zeniths weren't much better (Hillman used these,..swap with Holden Strommy)

Thats a load of HP for a small car.
It went up the hills stock,I know this much.
Did it well untill the diff blew,It was leaving two wheel black marks
all over  the road out front in secound gear, would not hold it though.

They seemed to look very similar to the Austin,I know these used to
power along at 140kph pretty easy.

Looks like I have found a good place for that Ford diff to live.

Thought I would teach the Major a lesson...lol

Arhh the Hillman....never saw many of these,I did however

have Hillman Hunter wagon,Funny car with a funny name.

I wonder why they would call it a Hunter or Hillman Hunter,I guess the
name is obvious.
It was made out of some good metal, she sat there for 25 years and did
not rust a bit more than it already was.
Think these had wooden componants on the rear of the wagon as well.

Had a HZ with a 253 4 on the floor it looked ok but it was a complete
basket case. Rust, leaks, c.nt wouldn't start in cold mornings and was
gutless and tired.

Only had it for 6 months after my LJ Torana.

And the Mazda SP23 which was the other halfs and that was a lemon too.

TE Cortina 4.1L 6Cyl Auto wagon.  Frighteningly bad.  Was about an inch
shorter on the driver's side than the passengers.  sh.t brakes, sh.t
steering, sh.t seats (constantly breaking driver's mounts), sh.t
interior, sh.t doors, door locks and door handles too.  sh.t auto
transmission and sh.t front end.

Apart from that it wasn't a bad car, really....

Cheers,

Andy.

My first car wasn't exactly a shitbox, but it was a bit um not great.

It was the first type of Suzuki Hatch, the 500 cc sort, with 3 cylinders. It
came 3rd hand from sydney, and having an evidently plastic clutch, it soon
needed a new one.
The gear stick was a long thin wobbly thing sticking out of the floor, and
2nd (and later 3rd) required double declutchig (Sydney's a rough place for
little manuals, I guess).
The water pump literally blew up one day, splattering scalding water all
over the bonnet, so there was an interesting pattern etched in the duco
after that.
It had no back seats, so I was able to fit 5 drunken hockey friends in the
car one night. The least drunken one scored the front seat for himself, the
other 4 squashed in the back (I still don't know how). There were howls from
the back when we took a corner fastish and the car rolled a bit. It had a
flat tyre the next day.
The wheels were tiny! Like lawnmower wheels.
When I put a cheap and agricultural stereo in it, it was plain that the
stereo had more power than the car.

But it was reliable, economical... not very nice to drive I have to admit,
but it worked.

Actually the worst shitbox I owned was a 1.9 litre Opel motored Sunbird
Torana that was bought as a "Between" car, it was traded in on a GSR Sigma
after a very short time with it :-)

I'd have to go with my 79 CL Valiant Wagon, broken door handles, ran like a
dog when cold tappet would get noisy when ever I reved it over 5500rpm,
broke the diff, the gearbox, 2 clutches, 2 motors, door handles, leaked when
raining, brake discs kept warping, had the telecom premium rural care pack
when we got it from auction, in the 80's it was using $80 of fuel a week and
$50 of bodyfiller. But didn't stop me putting mega blue stripes down the
sides.

The little Honda with the motor-bike engine? The Datto had the venerable L
something engine OHC same as 1600,180B etc? If so it was prolly more a
worn-out car perhaps?

Depends on the definition of shitbox, A toss up between a '80 Sigma in terms
of engine / drivetrain reliability and handling, or in terms of
insignificant and annoying sh.t going wrong would have to be the car we
currently have, a VX Commodore wagon, but in a decent sized family wagon to
cart the kids & assosciated sh.t around, we have little choice without
spending a fortune, a Falcon or Commodore, and seeing as my bro. works for
Holden well, the Commodore is still the choice I'd make.

The best car by far that I've owned is a '93 Subaru wagon, that while I
owned it only ever needed regular servicing and a few CV boots over
150,000kms.

Wow, that's too new for me to be able to comment. My bro had a new VS which
he said was a POS due to all the engine peripheral failures: w/pump,
h/balncer,ignition coil problems. fuel-pump plus a couple of others, all
before 60,000ks. A neighbour also had w/pump failure early on in a
VN,...so...

but in a decent sized family wagon to

Yes, they seem to be a real reliable car. In the snow, they were the only
vehicles 9especially in ute form to easily handle the snow and ice access
road to Mt Canobolas (Orange NSW). They just drove around all the stranded
L/cruisers.

1st, I'm not a "car nut", I own a number of cars and have raced others

2nd, You wouldn't know if there are pics of any of my cars or me on

3rd, the Lancia will be partially stripped for engineers report then
hopefully modified as little as possible, maybe not at all to get it
registered in Oz if at all possible.
It'll then be totally stripped and restored then appear at a few
events around Oz as part of a promotional exercise.
Why get it registered you may ask.....so I can show off...why else :-)

spurt by posting some pics of your own. \

You don't have to reveal any personal information, and can post pics withou
disclosing you or your location, but you already know that. You're just
using it as an excuse to not post any pics and prove your stories as fiction
:)

I think you are trying to feed dumb pills to anyone who listens to your
stories. Tracking back "over Sydney harbour" for a pilot with no instruments
rating, only allowed to fly VMC, with no transponder, sounds like a story,
considering the proximity of KSA and surrounding airspace classification.

"VFR aircraft cannot overfly a place like
Sydney, but are directed to a location such as Hornsby - where they would
normally be at 2,500 feet. IFR airline aircraft from the north operate over
Hornsby at 3,000 feet. Air traffic control is not involved in any way in
relation to separation. There is no transponder requirement for the VFR
aircraft at Hornsby and air traffic control generally does not give traffic
information to IFR airline aircraft on VFR aircraft which are in Class G
airspace at that location. The controller presumes that the VFR aircraft is
at the correct altitude."

Yet it is a fact, by your own admission that you are,( stated in another

Unless you are now saying someone else is piloting or training you during

The first time I ever did, the nice flight service officer gave me a
detailed briefing on the VFR routes including which roads to follow,
which water tower to turn at etc.

I found it incredibly depressing and reckoned i'd have had zero chance
of getting it right.

"Can I please depart via controlled air space?" I said in desperation...

"Music to my ears" said the FSO. And off I went, turned right after
take-off , turned more or less left at Richmond and next stop was
Walget.

It's a funny old world. I was terrified of the VFR lanes or corridors
or whatever they are called, but on the other hand I learned to fly in
controlled airspace at a shared military airbase.

Apparently most private pilots avoided controlled airspace cause they
didn't know what to do, where as due to experience I was in the
opposite situation.

Funny old world.

I worked in radio-maint at an AFIS A/P for yonks, and the sh.t that goes
down when a lighty is seen by another aircraft, sometimes military, in CAS
is unbelievable. Most go quietly unreported,.but if its an RPT, and they say
