Probably floated a valve and backfired up into the blower.

Do rotaries have valves?

No, but it didn't look like a rotary to me.

Maybe I was watching a different clip than you :)

It was running a 20B at the time.

Sounded like it. I had to listen to confirm it as rootes blowers aren't
ideal for rotaries and generally aren't used.

Yeah, it sounded like one.

I just watched it again, but with sound this time. The first time I looked
at it I didn't have the sound turned on, and the blower mounting just looked
like any other V8.

Yep, same here. That's why I played it again with sound up.

Yeah a blower on a rotary would more likely be offset to the side.  V8
conversions are pretty common.  But it did sounds like a rotary.

Yeah, it certainly did when I watched it the second time with the sound
turned on :)

Unusual blower mount for a washing machine engine.

Poppet valves no, however; some have other types of valves that don't
specifically relate to the basic engine operation.

I'd love to see how they'd mount that blower off a Rhone Gnome, let alone
mount it in the engine bay.  ;)

Blower backfire just like a regular piston engine. You can hear the engine
still spinning after the explosion so, it wasn't anything letting go in the
engine. Rotaries stop very fast when something lets go internally (which is
very rare).

Deserves him right for putting such a ridiculously oversized (and horsepower
sapping) blower on a rotary.

He could have saved the price of the blower and invested it where it would
have made the car faster than it supposedly was (prior to the blow up).

Id say that maybe the flywheel has let go severing several componants on its
way by the looks of the rear of the bonnet.

LOL! I like the way the bonnet flipped up.

I don't think it broke though, still a driveable
at the end.... "Yeah, go forward".

Looked almost to me like that was the intention
of what was supposed to happen and was rigged
to do that.

Being forward hinged,..it may have just been resting there.
