So I ended up getting a 2006 Corolla, which of course has an
immobilizer.  Think I should I still bother using a wheel-lock to
discourage theft?

Use everything you can, especially if you park in a dodgy
area. Car thiefs choose the most easy/quickest to take. The
more things in their way makes them take more time.

I find a Volvo badge fairly effective.

I'm a Libran Engineer. I don't argue, I discuss.

**Can't go wrong with a flashing red light on the dash. My old Dunnydore
was broken into three times, 'till I fitted a flashing red light and a
$2.00 sticker from Jaycar. I fitted an alarm later, but I'm convinced
that the red light is the best deterrent.

Even more so the Blue flashing LED. Most better alarms now use a Blue LED.
Wire it up from Battery to ACC. It goes out when you insert the key and turn
on acc's.

They do work as a deterant Im sure.

**My current Dunnydore (a VP) has a blue LED. Only because blue looks
cool though. The security on the VP is stunningly good. Very difficult
to steal. Maybe a flat-bed.....

Tend to agree.
However, be sure to give that car the flick relatively early in it's
miserably boring safe-from-adventure life - well before any of the
'advanced' security features begin to give trouble - mainly because ITYF
find then that it may be cheaper to replace the whole damm car than
renew, piece by piece, any of the trick stuff that goes tits up.

**"Trick stuff"? Bugger that. The most expensive and unreliable stuff on
my car has been the sort of stuff that shouldn't go wrong. Heater core,
radiator, air conditioner compressor, windscreen wiper motor, etc. And
the parts are expensive for the VP. My other Commodores (VH & VL) were
much cheaper to service. I guess it's due to the VP being mostly an
American car.

Faark - just how much is GM saving by putting shite basics aboard???
Worse, given that accusation/question - they sure as sh.t have some nerve
for slamming you big bucks for what may well be utterly sub-standard
(vital) bits and pieces:-)

**Oh it gets worse. Much worse. My partner has a Telstar Ghia (3 years
older than my Crapadore), with similar clicks up. Apart from batteries
(the Telstar came with a pitiful excuse for a battery), tyres and a
water pump bearing, nothing has gone wrong with her car. Not a damned
thing. Hell, I've had to spend almost as much on the air con, as I spent
on the car. It's been re-gassed more times than I care to think about.
She hasn't even had to re-gas her bloody air conditioner. She seems to
enjoy reminding me about just how reliable her car is.

Ive used a Blue 3000Mcd LED for mine and it lights up the whole interior, I
suppose it helps the theives to see exactly what they are trying to steal
eh. ;o)
