5 flat tyres in 10 days. What a great way to start 2008.

I think nature is telling me it's time for new tyres again.

Time for some tyre with more plys than you have then eh.

Since Ive been using the Coopers of BFGs Ive not had a puncture yet. Well
apart from reall soft sand where I ran the preddures to low and peeled a
tyre of its rim. Thank god for 'Engine Start'.

I run 10 ply. The problem is not the side walls though. Once the tread
gets down to a point where sharp stones can easily penetrate, it's
time for new tyres even though the current ones are still very legal.

I use Cooper too. Used to be Firestone but I made the switch to
Coopers on the last set.

LOL. Let's examine your "logic" for a sec.

I'm driving around like normal, the usual different styles for
different road surfaces, haven't had a flat in months and months...
then all of a sudden, without changing driving styles (why would I?) I
get 5 flats within 10 days. Jonz - er, "arfa mo" - concludes: it must
be my driving style. LMAO!

I really hope your income doesn't depend on any sort of critical
thinking or grasp of scientific principles.

I really hope the bastards are selling you tyres of the correct
temperature rating....

They don't have to any more, ya know - it's open slather.
And the lower temp rating tyres very probably cost the dealers Less:-)

Correct, nothing to do with it at all, its more to do with where he
lives which is on a farm in the middle of no where where the roads are poor.

Doubt the "always", he wouldn't survive too long at that speed on roads
that destroy his tyres.
Nothing wrong with 120-130kph in the right conditions.

A better way to describe me doing 120-130 would be "not often". But he
knows that. He's just making things up to troll with.

The key to driving on our stoney dirt roads when they're in their
current condition is to make sure there are almost zero lateral Gs in
cornering, and no significant acceleration or deceleration.

My local tyre guy pointed out that braking not only presses the fronts
harder into the ground, they tend to stand sharp rocks (that were
lying flat) up on their sides so your rears cop it. And of course
accelerating can be very harmful if you happen to hit a currugation
and end up wheel spinning - even if you don't you're only going to end
up braking later on at some point - and cornering exposes your side
walls.

So I tend to cruise around the dirt at 50-60. Of course, troll would
have you believe the 120-130 rubbish. I think he loves me. I'm always
on his mind :-)
Toby Ponsenby - 13 Jan 2008 04:20 GMT
> So I tend to cruise around the dirt at 50-60.

Have you tried slapping the device into 4WD High? Only caution on that is
that very slow speeds or high loads may wind-up the system a tad.
Methinks Hiluxen is light enough for fairly low speeds to be just fine,
though.

Yeah I do. It tends to help the rears more that way. And the dirt and
stones are loose enough that wind-up isn't an issue.

Yeah it's no problem on the dirt. I just can't get away with it on the
sealed stuff. Back when I first got the Hilux I forgot and left it in
4WD when I hit the sealed road. Only took a kay or so before a whining
sound could be heard from the area of the transmission. "D'oh!"

Okay, one last response to you and then your dumb arse is in the
killfile for good. You'll need logical thought to follow here, so it's
probably going to be painful for you.

The 130-150 was - as was clearly stated in the post - because of what
little fuel I had in the tank was leaking out and I had to get it home
in a hurry. The cops knew this. He just needed my details for the
paper work involved in the incident - the incident of my ute sitting
on the street and pissing petrol out everywhere. That said, if he
thought my speed on that section of road was dangerous, I have no
doubt I would've copped a fine for it.

"often I'll be sitting on 140km/h on my way to work in Oberon. It's
65km and I usually do it in 35 minutes"

There are stretches of road out here where it is not inherently unsafe
to hit the 140 mark. Proof of this is in cops not pulling you up for
it and them doing it themselves. There are a few points on my journey
where this can be done and since I do it twice a day; "often I'll be
sitting on 140km/h". That doesn't mean I sit on 140 for 5 minutes at a
time.

Also note the words "It's 65km and I usually do it in 35 minutes".
That's an average speed of 111km/h. Given that it's a 100 zone the
whole way, how much time could I possibly be spending at 140 while
still getting an average of 111? Answer: not much.

It'll probably take you a few days to get your neanderthal barely-able-
to-write-coherently brain around this, or instead you could continue
to pretend I'm wrong about the simple maths and English points above
and post something like "yiz yer fikn bluddie bullstht" which is more
your standard and requires no thought.

I enjoyed laying all this out in a "for dummies" format.

However, <plonk>

I'll be looking at Coopers. Those BFG Long Trails were a horrible tyre and
the sidewalls bagged during cornering (I don't slow down for corners, you
save petrol that way).  It's hard to know these things when you go tyre
shopping.

Look up Cooper Discoverer STT. Sidewalls specifically made to not
buldge, and the tread blocks that go halfway down the wall are
designed to deflect sharpies.

Last time I went shopping, I wanted the classic Coopers with the blocky
tread but they didn't come in my size. However, from memory, one did. But it
looked a bit roady.  I'll go look up that model and see if it'll fit Vitey's
feet (he has funny sized ones).

Bugger. Doesn't fit Vitey. Their ATR ones come in his size, on paper they
sound like they might work.  I don't do as much rough stuff any more,
although my driveway features a number of shale reefs sprouting up.
Looks very roady, but I guess that is the majority of my driving these days.

What size rims on Vitey? I just assumed they were 16 inch, but are
they 15 or something?

Yep, 15 inch, 205/75.  It's a weird size, and there's not a lot of tyres
that come in it.

Who cares if you go larger/slightly smaller? Buy what you need and live with

My last set of Coopers were the SST's (Mud style) and they were bloody good
on sharp rocks and sticks.  Very noisey compared to a road tyre of course
and absoluely ratshit in the wet on bitumen.  They last with a lot of off
roading almost 50,000kms which I thought was bloody good.  Since then Ive
used BFG All Terrains and they are much better for road use but ratshit in
anything thats clogging such as clay, grass, mud etc etc etc.  Good on sand
but.

I did try a set of Fire Stone RMTs but I sold that wagon before I wore em
out. They only had 3 plys from memory instead of 5 but they were pretty good
in the gooie stuff, cheap too compared. Almost the same pattern as BFG
Muddies.

Damn. I'm still with the ST right now, but my next move was going to
be the STT. If they're that sh.t in the wet I may have to rethink :-(

I don't like All Terrains. They seem to be fairly crap at everything
which is ironically a direct result of trying to do everything IMHO.

I used Firestone RMT from 2001 to 2007, and they were 10 ply except
for the last set that were only 8 ply. Never seen 3 or 5.

The STT is okay the SST (Two S's) are sh.t.

Sorry, side wall plys I meant.

Yeah, the US sets are 10 ply and come with White lettering on the saide
walls, the NZ made ones have no white lettering and are only 8 ply from
memory.

I'm not really a fan of white lettering, but they all seem to have it
out this way so I guess he's only importing the American ones.

If it's only punctures they're sh.t easy to mend (tubes or
tubeless)... provided you don't have to inflate 'em with a hand pump.

Jeez, that's a lot. Is the white stuff showing? or the wire?!

Vitey's about due for his 3rd set of tyres too.  He's done 249,000 kms on 2

I got 100,000 out of a set of coopers on a HJ65 sahara a few years back, and
that included a 6 month trip around Australia (heavily loaded) with a
mixture of sealed road, dirt, rocks, sand and mud.
When I sold the car the tyres still had about 10,000 kms left on them.

Don't forget the Vitara weighs next to nothing.
I suspect the current set of tyres that ant complained about since day
one are a very hard compound which probably explains their inability to
perform the way she wants.
