So the car was minding its own business parked down at at Manly when
some twat kindly reversed into the vehicle. The damage is that the
bumber bar is now loose. It seems to have been knocked off its
brackets or similar. Wife took car to 2 repairers who kindly informed
her the cost to repair would be $1500 which i dont have. So is there a
manual of some sort to explain how to remove and replace or refit a
bumper to my car. If the bumper is stuffed, i can buy a new one on
ebay.
Any advice. Cheers from a person from manly

You don't even mention whether it's front or rear bumper...

I've replaced the front bumper on my AU II with a smartbar, which cost
about $1K and I fitted it myself.  I've also had the rear bar off mine
to fit a towbar...

If it's the front, it depends how hard it was hit as to what needs
replacing.  There's an "egg crate" inside the bumper, bolted to the
front of the chassis, which usually survives small prangs okay and
can be sourced from wreckers fairly easily if it does need replacing.

Just rip it off, the AU looks better without a bumper.

Seriously though, they're not terribly hard to take off and put back on but
it's any damage behind the bumper that might be in question.

You might be able to find the correct bumper second hand and any associated
bit and pieces that need replacing for much less then the qouted price.

Yes, there is.

For detailed body repair information you'll need a factory workshop manual
as the after-market ones like those made by Gregorys, Haynes and Ellery
normally don't deal with car bodywork specifically. They usually offer
general minor vehicle body repair hints that may not be of much value to
you. On the other hand, a used factory manual for an AU might fetch 100
bucks or so if you can find one.

Still, you may not need one at all.

Removing the bumper is a pretty simple affair that normally involves
removing a few nuts from inside the boot and sliding the bumper off its side
"tracks". Open your boot and have a look for a plastic panel covering the
inside of the rear lower section of the car that the boot lock is fitted to.
Remove this panel and you should see two nuts or bolts on either side of the
rear panel that hold the bumper bracketry to the back panel of the car.
Remove these bolts/nuts and then pull the bumper off as a complete assembly.

As to whether or not the bumper is damaged to the point of being reusable no
one can tell you without looking at it, but the bumper bars themselves
normally consist of an inner bar with an outer cover, and the outer cover
can be replaced fairly easily if it's cracked or torn. You can still buy
them new (in which case they come unpainted and will have to be painted to
match the car which means a trip back to the panel beater), or you can try
Ebay or a wrecker to find a good used one in your colour that can be
refitted.

When you remove the rear bumper, check the panel the bumper botls to for
damage as if the bumper copped a hit right were it bolts to the car that
part of the car can be bent *very* easily.
