As you have all probably guessed by now, I'm on the prowl for a cheapie 4WD.
Unfortunately the Cherokee I looked at Friday, seems to have too much to be
done to it to even get a roadworthy, so I'm putting it on the backburner.
Now I have just seen a Pajero in a not too shabby condition for $4,500.
Mileage is high at 280,000 clicks but drives bloody beautiful and runs
nicely.
I know the feeling towards Mitsu in here (I'm neither for nor against them
really - other than their resale is pathetic), so I was hoping mechanics (of
Noddy's calibre) in here could give me some advice as to stay clear or what
to look for. It's a V3000 multi-point engine. Appearance would be 7out of 10
for a 15 year old car. No noises in transmission but unfortunately unlike
the Cherokee, is petrol only.
TIA

I've got nothing against Mitsubishi as a brand either (despite the ramblings
of some delusional brain dead MMAL apologist), but my advice, for what it's
worth, would be to have any vehicle the likes of what you're contemplating
here *thoroughly* checked before purchasing, as it's got two things going
against it right from the start: It's age and it's mileage.

Two questions you need to answer here:

Do you specifically *want* a 4wd, and what's your budget?

If you're just after a wagon rather than a 4wd, then stop looking in that
area and look at a Commodore/Falcon/Camry wagon. *Much* nicer vehicles to
drive, cheaper & easier to maintain, and more fuel efficient (on average)
than your average 4wd with dedicated wagon space that's a hell of a lot more
useable.

Either way, get out to the local auction houses and see what your money can
buy you.

I agree. The $4,500 sounds ok but could blow out by more than double if it
has a lot of "hidden" problems if you know what I mean. I am in the RACQ but
do I really want them to tell me it's a heap of sh.t?

Yes, a real 4WD that's cheap but reliable. I don't mean a Rav, Forrester or
CRV etc. Cheap so that I don't give a flying f.ck about knocking it around,
but mainly reliable because some of the places I will be taking it to, I
wouldn't want to break down.

You're right, but I don't intend selling off my other 2 cars for it. It's
more of an addition than a replacement. My missus can't understand that.

That would mean a trip to Brisbane and as I don't have a dealer's licence, I
probably wouldn't get the bargain you'd get or are referring to.

Well Roger,
Id be looking for a cheap Hilux, or tell us a bit more info ron exactly what
you intend on doing with this 4x4?
Are you goinf to be with more than 1 other person?
Do you want Petrol or Deisel?
Do you want a wagon or ute style?
Are you going to be doing a lot of sand driving?
Are you going to carry a load?

A good Hilux would be hard to find for $5k but you may get a Surf for around
$4 1/2 - $7k.

A good inspection should revel any major problems, you can choose to
ignore any minor issues that are unlikely to cost a fortune to repair.

A mate owned one all last year and unlike most of his cars, he failed to
destroy it. He threw it at all kinds of ridiculous sh.t.

He did bend the f.ck out of a few things, but the car drove as happily
as ever and nothing broke. Even did a few very daring water crossings.

If you're looking for a diesel though be prepared to pay a *lot* more.
Second hand petrol fourbies are quite affordable while the same model in
diesel requires quite a few k more in most cases.

Always the case in many models of 4x4, depending on condition.

My younger brother owns a 3.0lt V6 Pajero and he loves it, I don't the
exact year but its getting on a bit now and could be about the same age
as the one you looked at.
As with any older vehicle its condition and the way its been serviced
means everything, get it checked out by someone who knows what they are
looking at but generally they are a good vehicle.

despite only being a shopping trolley/school bus 4WD they didn't really
present and major problems, the earlier body models were bad for rust
and the 4cyl models used that shitty Astron engine
these later models are not bad at all
very versatile seating, probably the best in that regard, so many
options even up to making them into a full double bed(if the 3dr row are
still fitted)

just don't be expecting good fuel economy, these weigh around 2.1T and
this is an old tech fuel injected engine

good news though is many parts are interchangeable with the Triton and
Magna of that year and there should be plenty of parts available
though I doubt you'd need to do much to it
