Watching "A car is Reborn" on Disco channel. This and the UK show
"Wheeler Dealer" is interesting.
One curious thing is that they have kits of rubber type stick on strip
with stick on numbers/digits. Seems a bit weird. You could make
up anything you wanted to.

Once upon a time you could make your own rego plates in S.A, I assume
those days are long gone.

Probably not quite as retro-reflective as the relevant authorities would
like :)

The UK has a rego system where a car is allocated a number for life.
One letter (or maybe two since they ran out of letters) denotes the
year in which the car was first registered. The letter Q is used for
one-off specials, heavily modified cars and kit cars that have
components with varying age.
You can get plates made up with the number you require at any auto
accessories store. There are strict standards for letter size, font,
plate size, colours and reflectivity. Not sure how they enforce people
using the correct number but it seems to work.
I guess if the number you are using doesn't match the description in
the police database there would be questions asked.
