Posted in response to someone recently on here crapping on about lack of
a tax component to the fuel used by the Septics.

errrr its taxEs.

And from the article its probably just tax, as they dont seem to have three
or four lots of  direct TAXES as we do here - resource rent tax, fuel
excise, GST and State based fuel levies - there's no doubt more hidden away
such as Dangerous Goods Licence fee, Fire Brigade inspection charge, land
tax/rates, payroll tax, anything else come to mind?

Indeed. They're screaming about paying half the price we are paying
(imperial vs US galls taken into account). It;s an interesting exercise. Did
our Gov (Hawkey from memory) put an ever increasing levy to maintain "world
parity" code for ripp-off, or to get an ever increasing bounty?

The cost of fuel has far more reaching effects e.g. cost of food due truck
fuel cost inceases. This burden is chucked onto pensioners and other
low-income earners at the shop who may not even have a car (they use public
transport I suspose), is that fair?

The kernel of the issue is the inherant unfairness of the tax-system on
fuel. If they want us to pay a tax to stop us wasting fuel, which is how one
polly put it back in the Hawke govt IIRC, then *make sure* any "windfall"
tax gains do not double dip us at the food supermarkets.

Make no mistake, "battlers" will start avoiding large cars if it keeps
going, and its become apparent the Arabs have finally learned it's a limited
resource, hence their resistance to increasing output. Surprised it took
this long.

From site:

"I think we've finally come closer, if not reached, a tipping point where
gasoline prices are affecting people's behavior," said Bill Leonard, a
member of the Board of Equalization. One evidence is the slight decrease in
gasoline consumption for the past couple of years, he said"
This is one good outcome from the whole thing.

I've know for almost 18 years now they tax fuel. Use home
heating oil in your diesel - and get caught.... Different
colour additives though. That is how they tell.

I still think its just that the wage and tax structure of our two countries
that make the prices differ. In your economy as I understand you pay more
for petrol and more taxes. I have no idea how much your car registration
or car insurance runs. You guys seem to make more money at your jobs than
we seem to. How do your groceries compare. I think you get more paid
holidays and longer vacations than us. You have way better public health
care and better old age care. We pay less for petrol than you and less
taxes on cars. I am sure that there are good and bad things in your
countries structure as in ours. Paying taxes and buying what we all need
is getting tougher for all of us. I'm sorry that you think if we here in
the U.S. paid the same for petrol as you would solve all the problems in
the world. Not fair to call all yanks "septics". I thought you were better
than that.

Why not for f.ck's sake?

Rhyming slang is a common Australian trait, and Americans have been called
"Septic tanks" in place of "Yanks" for years. It's often shortened to
"septics" or "seppo's".

I don't believe it was ever meant to be derogatory.

There are some USA type folk who are total cockheads, however
some that would run rings around both you and me in what they
know and how to do it.

I think the term is a bit rank. I know I'm guilty of using it.

It depends. 38.1 cpl/litre fuel (diesel/petrol).

I don't have my vehicle rego stuff handy right now, however it is $430
odd
in CTP and $250 or something rego, and then it's up to you to get
any other insurance you think you want - whether that be only to
another person's property or to cover the whole thing. That can be an
annual payment of over $1K depending on where you live, driving
history,
etc, or as low as around $300.

I hate to say it, but we do. Rene Rivkin said it also. The US $ is not
looking good at the moment either. Not that our $ is up there- Canada
seems to be kicking folks butts right now.

It's funny however I'm told I need to look up the price of a Maccas
Big Mac and compare.

We winge about stuff here. If I could not afford diesel, I make my
own.
However lately not bothered, especially after moving to a place 2.5km
from work and I don't have to pay ED/Bridge tolls now either.

As I mentioned in t'other post, yup, should not do that.
