I was wondering if anyone would be able to help with a problem with my '96 VS
Commodore. During highway operation it runs quite cool, about 1/4 on the
gauge, but in town driving it is about 3/4. It holds a constant temperature
both on the highway and in town. It recently has had a radiator flush, new
radiator cap and new heater hoses and radiator hoses. Is the temperature okay
for the in town work?

its the same as my girlfriends VS .. the thermo fans cut in at 3/4 and
then it gets no hotter, no matter how long you are stuck in the traffic
or how hot the day is.

don't panic i reckon its fine.

you could probably change the thermo fan switch to a lower temp one, but
so long as the hoses are good it will be ok at this temp.

What problem?

As long as the fans cycle in and out it's fine.

As has already been said, as long as the fans come on when the engine gets
to "coolant getting too hot" temperature, then things could be OK. I say
could be, because a 1/2 scale differentail on the tenp-gauge seems a little
wide. On the cars I have had with electric fans, it has been more like 1/4
scale of the temp-gauge. What that "fans operate" temperature acttually is,
is determined by the bi-metal (or similar) switch screwed into the cooling
system somewhere. Now it's possible, given your 1/2 scale differental, that
the fan switch has drifted high *or* the gauge itself is reading too high or
gone non-linear at hihger temps.
If it was me, I would beg, borrow, buy a separate gauge which is operated by
the expansion of alcohol in a long copper tube. This will give you a
reference to check the fans off temp and on temp,..plus give you an idea of
your engine running temp when the gauge is at 1/4 scale. The only snag is
finding somewhere to immerse the alcohol bulb. On one car I had with a
similar problem I found an unused drilling in the engine's head which
allowed me to insert the bulb. But for just a temp check,.you maybe able to
withdraw the top hose of its radiator fitting, slip the bulb in and then
just have the thin tube coming out inbetween the radiator spout and the
hose, with some silastic to aid sealing.
