fuel consumption has changed blending octane ratio

In a thread a while back the question of octane ratios came up.
Situation :

Prior to last service  just used normal 91  unleaded (BP) & Gull

Post last service  noticed consumption went up  (over exactly same
routes and driving style )
went up about 1 litre per 100k

So chucked in half a tank of 95  35 litres to 70 litre tank
consumption went not only back to normal but improved slightly ?

ran tank down to 10 litres remaining  refuelled vehicle  to full with
91 and up went the consumption again.
Thought hmmmmmmmm  so refilled next time with 98    consumption only
got worse ???

back to 50/.50 blend of 95/91  it the vehicle is less thirsty and back
to 7.3 7.7 per 100 clicks
on 98 its 10.9!!!!!

Asked the dealer  AVG Perth  what could be going on
only clue he thinks is they change the computer for winter motoring ?
And to parameters for its mileage  ?

He said might be an idea to hook up my in car computers (2 lap tops)
with a program he has  that monitors performance  from the cars
computer system  But is a "bit unofficial"

Given I do up to a 1000 clicks a day  this consumption thing
translates direct to my bottom line .
Any thoughts or comments ?
Cheers

I've noticed a bit of variation in my fuel consumption lately but it
seems to have improved if anything and I'm still using the same fuel
which is usually the Shell 95.
If you are driving 1000klms per day why the hell are you using petrol?
LPG will cut your fuel bill in half, if range is a problem you can get a
variety of different tank shapes and sizes that fit almost anywhere.
What vehicle?

Daryl.
Out here in the scrub not a lot of LPG  infrastructure .
I also need EVERY bit of boot space    and enjoy  the Sonata
Also cars get  changed pretty  regularly  ( fleet & all that)

Given the options  a vehicle that just drinks 7.3 to 7.7 on average
and costs heaps less  than
available options   At this time negates  lpg

When LPG infrastructure arrives where I go then what you say becomes a
logical option

Was the 91 unleaded actually E10 though? A lot of service stations now sell
E10 and put that price up on the main price board instead of the actual
standard ULP price, and some don't have normal unleaded at all (usually
independents, etc. that I've noticed so far).

I reckon it's because you're getting fuel that has ethanol in it, perhaps
unknowingly because your normal outlet has substituted it for regular
unleaded?

If Bloody BP ( sovereign)  have done that   then
time to see them in court . As  the pumps we pull from are not the e
10  brand
Just plain BP Unleaded  ( might take samples next drop and get them
analysed)

Any way we are shifting to Caltex  /Ampol  next month
BP  Charge like wounded bulls   and the Bulk deal from Caltex is FAR
better

!!! BP are the prime culprit (in my part of Sydney anyway) for putting the
price of E10 up as normal unleaded on the price boards with tiny text
underneath advising 'may be up to 10 percent ethanol'... So double-check and
be sure you didn't buy blended fuel by mistake, and see if the BP outlet has
stopped selling standard (non-ethanol blended) ULP. BP's price boards have
green background too so it's a lot harder to read the tiny text on the move.

I have no problem with Caltex fuels - unlike Shell (who STILL has no supply
of Vpower!), Caltex has plenty of Vortex 98 and almost always has it in
stock. I can't believe Shell still has not got Vpower selling again in
Sydney - something going on there. I prefer Vpower because of it's lower
sulfur content for my Saab c900's. 10 percent ethanol fuel works ok in the
newer one (with ECU-controlled 16V engine) but the older one (with reliable
K-jet mechanical fuel injection) is noticably worse with it.
