Brett - 15 May 2008 09:16 GMT If you got to make the ultimate road trip (and money, geographic location of the trip and the make / model of the desired car you'd most want to use wasn't a limitation), what things or person/s would you most want to take with you and please say why. You can take any high profile person/s you admire, irrespective whether anyone named is living or is presently deceased.

Well, if they're "presently deceased" the odds are in favour of them staying that way, besides which why would you want to travel with a dead body (unless you're intending to bury it in an unmarked grave ?

Two '20's open crank engines, locally, are rusting away because they have been pulled apart (crank-shafts, pistons, heads, mixers, magneto's etc) and left laying around without any surface protection what-so-ever. It's f.cking criminal.
And then there's the windmill I see collapsing, more every day when I drive into town. But the cane farmer is *gunna* do something with it one day. And there's the dairy farmer who might need his windmill one day if global warming causes the town water supply to fail. FFS

In many cases, these vehicles would be excellent as the basis for a hot rod, but because they're left to rot, they end up completely worthless. It's very sad for those people who don't think that the only good vehicles are brand new ones...
I'm looking forward to my next trip to Narrabi in August. I'll get to see some of the 6 hotrods that were under construction last year finished and probably see a few more in progress.

My Father in Law was a cocky out past Parkes with a few thousand Acres, the paddock near the house had a veritable wealth of old cars and tractors. When he sold up a few years ago due to ill health he had a clearance sale that filled 14 A4 double sided pages with various collector pieces and nearly made more from the sale of those than he did from the farm :-) I used to wander about up there and marvel at some of the old stuff he had collected over the years. Ultimate road trip? I'd finish the motorhome conversion of my old Bedford bus, including the turbocharger on the 392 inter V8 on straight LPG, load the Volvo (350 chev, same LPG system as on the inter so carrying spares :-) ) into the back and take a lap of Australia.

Well, I'll admit my tastes have changed some, so the lure of driving a 'street legal' car on public highways has diminished. So to me a "big wonderful road trip" might not be very far off. My motor home/RV/tow vehicle, pulling an enclosed car hauler, with a decent sports racer inside. Itenerary planned to hit a new track nearly every weekend.
So, to "ultimize": 1. much nicer motor home, 2. much nicer race car (perhaps Radical V8 or Diasio 962R turbo, DPL etc.) 3. Add an "Alternate transportation" (small/easy/local wandering) (perhaps a 'tiny' car that fits in car hauler? - not enthused anymore with a motorcycle!). 4. With both of this couple. 5. If money is truly no issue, add a mechanic that shows up at each track, and 6. a exceptional 'local driver/entrant' for each track for extra visiting, information, and smoothing out all the 'strange issues' that show up at any 'strange place'. Hmmm, rethinking #6, a Phil Hill, or Dan Gurney, or even G. Hill riding with us on whole trip would be wonderfully enertaining, and indeed would probably 'smooth out' all local issues!

I'd drive a motor home, and take Max Mosley, or at least his diary.
