Fitting a VT airbag to a VS ?

The question is not whether it fits - I know it will, I've done it.  The
horn works fine too.

The question is whether the airbag will work properly ? Also, the steering
wheel audio controls no longer work - I have not investigated that yet.

I swapped them over because my old one has a heavily worn area on the "thumb
rest" and I find the horn to difficult to locate in awkward situations (ie
when it's needed most) and the VT horn switch is much easier.

I figured that if it fit - and the airbag plug fit, and the airbag warning
light didn't come on, I'm all good.  Then I got to wondering whether it
would be safe/legal/ill advised ?

Thoughts?

as holden never certified a VS with a VT driver airbag, it's not
legal.

no idea whether it would work. assuming you've wired it all up
correctly and the wiring connection is compatible, i can't see why it
wouldn't.

Actually - I believe the VT bag is very similar to to VS series 3 airbag.
If I were to get a series 3 airbag and put it on a series 1 would that be ok
?

Wiring it up is easy - one wire one hole - and a perfect fit between models.

A simple check of the airbag part numbers would probably clear the matter
up.

But does the ECU need to be told the airbag is there? Are other sensors
required?

No, the SRS module senses and checks the circuit so presumably the airbags
are compatible at least electrically. If the airbag isn't exactly like the
VS one, IOW identical part number, the fitment of a VT bag to a VS doesn't
comply and is therefore illegal.

If the airbags differ at all in the way they mount and their detonation
force differs then the structural integrity of the steering column and
steering wheel may be compromised and if the design of the bag and inflation
rate and reach differ even fractionally from the correct bag you are placing
the driver under serious risk.

I wouldn't take that chance.

You put that well, and make some good points.  I shall remove and research
before considering refitting.

Cheers

I guess you'd have to do a crash test and see :)

Make sure you tell your insurance company.

sure but ask a friendly dealer tech and he might clarify it for you.
