what to buy next?

rebel - 30 May 2008 07:16 GMT All mother-outlaw jokes aside guys, I'd appreciate your input here.
OK two years back we got her out of her aging 1990 Pintara and into a slightly used ('05) Corolla auto hatch, based on her available funds. She's 82 and we figured this car would outlive her. Not so - last Sunday she managed to stack it. She walked away with a scratch on her nose, presumably from the airbag. Just got the call, insurance is writing it off, she'll be getting a payout of ~$17K.
Last time after shortlisting we tossed up between a new Getz or a slightly used 'rolla (as the new one was over-budget). By the time you upgraded the base Getz with two extra doors, larger donk, auto, etc the difference was very small vs the used Corolla, not sure what the current scenario is on that score. Wasn't excited by Kia's offering either. Not at all sorry we went with the Toyota.
So what is she going to be able to get on-road for say 20 tops, four door, auto, good rearward vision (through rear window), well-built and not with known issues? All sensible suggestions will be explored. Thanks.

Bearing her age in mind if she *really* doesn't need 4 doors or the biggest engine available then the 3 door 1.4 Getz is a no brainer.

Not at all sorry we went with the > Toyota. Fark; I'd pick the Kia Rio over the Getz any day of the week!! I drove a Getz around Tassie and it was positively horrid. "Rudimentary" is probably the best word. Apart from the fairly clever adjustable rear-seat it wasn't a patch on my missus's Rio (and hers is an '05 1.5L. I believe the current 1.6 is better again).
I don't s'pose the mother-in-law would care but Hyundai claim 77kw from their 1.6L Getz and it's nothing near as powerful as the 78kw 1.5 Rio, so I expect that the 2008's 1.6 Rio will be streets ahead with it's claimed 82kw. The Getz was breathless in any overtaking situation, affected by even the faintest crosswinds, and just awkward over any pot-holes or uneven road-surfaces. Getz has spent more on styling and has a bigger advertising budget though.....

Jeez, you sure that Getz didn't have something wrong with it?
I've driven a couple of Rio's, and the Getz sh.ts all over them in my opinion. The Rio is f.cking *awful* :)

I recon I must have driven half a dozen different Getz now and while they're not an uber high quality car I certainly haven't found anything wrong with them. Kia, on the other hand, have yet to make anything that I'd let my dog sleep in.

Otherwise, for $15k it's good.

On a slightly different note I was also quite underwhelmed by the Corolla I hired in Melbourne two or three years ago too. My main gripe was that it was an automatic (and I ABHOR 4cyl automatics[1]) but I didn't think it was any better handling, ride or interior than the Rio and it certainly didn't warrant the $5k price difference! The auto drove me bonkers; it'd change up every-time the revs started to approach the point where the 16v engine could actually start making power! It'd probably be fine on the highway but it was diabolical to drive in fast-moving traffic where speed-matching for merging and lane-changing is important.
Signature Knob [1] The only reason I was in a Getz in Tassie was that they'd "upgraded" the 5dr 1.6 manual Rio I'd booked to an auto. I kicked up a stink but the only manual they had was a 3dr Getz. I didn't get any refund either 'cause the Getz's rate was higher than the Rio's rate!
Noddy - 31 May 2008 11:15 GMT > On a slightly different note I was also quite underwhelmed by the Corolla > I hired in Melbourne two or three years ago too. Agree with that.
I hired a 2006 model in QLD about 6 months or so ago that only had 37k km's on the dial and it was a pretty average car indeed.

Yeah, this one was an auto and it did exactly the same thing. The box was up and down like a hooker's undies trying to decide what gear it wanted to be in. Very touchy indeed.
On the other hand, My old lady has an auto Getz, a 1.3 smallblock no less, and my sister had exactly the same model until she pranged it and they both performed exceptionally well.

Still, not as bad as some. On our recent trip to NZ we'd booked a Kia wagon but there wasn't one available when we got there and had to settle for a Mitsubishi Lancer wagon.
What a *c.nt* of a car.

Heh heh; I almost bought a Lancer (for the missus) on three different occasions during the 90s and each time I came away from the showroom shaking my head that it so poorly matched up to what Nissan, Diahatsu, Toyota and later Hyundai had to offer at the time. I stopped going back after the 90s!

Don't blame ya'.
They were f.cking *horrid* things of piss poor quality, and every poor bastard I ever met who had one got their fingers well and truly burnt by them. The current one is supposed to be a good car, but it'd want to be after the f.cking heaps of complete sh.t that have worn the badge in the past.
Still, you gotta wonder about Mitsubishi. When they were running the TV adds for the current Lancer a short time ago one of the key features they listed in the commercials was a "50% strengthitised body". They must think their target audience is pretty f.cking dumb if they have to invent words to appeal to them :)

The newer Kia's have come a long way, and the Getz is getting long in the tooth... testdrive and decide.

Yep, unfortunately my Nanna after writing off her own three cars and two others in the process in the last 10 years - all her fault - wouldn't take the hint (nor her doctor).
She's still driving.

Nah, the Manx isn't quite the level of refinement she'd like. The Dat16 - although not refined - is certainly a rugged and reliable beast. Owned two myself in years long gone, great machine.

Knobdoodle - 31 May 2008 09:05 GMT > Yuk! the 120Y was among the worst things Nissan did after 1968. Nissan committed some pretty major sins from 1973 until the 1990. The Datsun Sunny, 200B and '80s Bluebird (the 4cyl limosine!) to name a few.....

Remember the Bluebird TR-X? I think it still holds the record as the world's *slowest* "performance" car.
Apart from any SAAB that is :)

Over here it's medical checks from 80 onwards and a driving test at age 85, but since there was no medical reason for her not being fit to drive the doctor couldn't do much. I'm not sure if she is going to take the test this year or hand her license in, she likes her independence so will likely have a crack at it.
