I have some streaks on my drivers side windshield left by the wiper. They
have been there for years, I can't get them off and it's extremely annoying.
My friend said they come off but I tried his method of a green kitchen
scourer with dishwashing soap but they're still there. Windex doesn't do
anything either. Please can someone give a suggestion.

Try 10% metho in water, no don't drink it.
If the screen is scratched by the wipers then a rock and a new windscreen.
I can't believe you used a scourer on your windscreen :-)

Could be the same person flushed the sump out with water with the car
running after they emptied the oil or the one that cleaned the carby
with sand.
I actually stuffed a windscreen a few years ago on a hire car, Picked it
up on a rainy day from brissy airport and drove to the gold coast with
the wipers on the whole way, next day I got in the car there was this
deep groove at eye level on the passenger side. Lifted the windscreen
wiper and there was a bit of the cleaning brush under the blade.

Very important to preserve the screen to clean the wiper blades, but not many
people do it.
Sand is a real problem here.. coast. Mix with water from a sprinkle makes a good
grinding paste.

A plastic scourer shouldn't be able to scratch glass, I would've thought.

Which is exactly what I thought - until I tried it :)
Lots of very fine scratches... not noticeable without strong light
though.

Maybe windscreens were made of proper glass in those days ?

YOur screen is stuffed, take it to a windscreen repairer for 100% judgement but if they didnt come
off with a slight abrasive then your up fr a new windscreen.
Do you have windscreen insurance? Phillips screwdrivers rammed into the glass looks exactly like a
stone chip................ so Ive heard. And then a bit of pressure from INSIDE to ensure its
cracked and new screen needed.
Screens arent THAT dear, Hilux one Ive just done was only $260 fitted.

I was quoted about that for a Brumby windscreen but I found I could buy it
and fit it myself for (fuzzy memory) about $130 (+ a cartridge of silicone).
I didn't have a car handy to go fetch it so I just took my motorbike and
strapped it over the back of the seat.
On the way back home there was a set of traffic-lights malfunctioning and a
Copper directing traffic so I had to do some quick lane-changing and
positioning to keep a car between me and him to block the Copper's view as I
went through!

Hell for under $300 why would I bother! THey f.ck it up they pay for a new one, If I do I have to
fork out anyway. Id rather pay for someones experience to get it done right.... well usually right.
Not a bad trailer for a bike really, why did you sell it?

In the '70s I got really good at carrying a carton of tallies home on the tank.
Then there was the bag of cement. When it slips down between left leg and tank
can cause the vehicle to list to the left and if left leg is put down then
cement will fall.. oh what to do what to do... eee eeee girly screams

Eek... don't use even those green plastic scourers. I found out the hard
way many years ago. Thought I'd give a used windscreen a good clean
before it was fitted. Looked fine... until I drove into sunlight...

Autoglym do a nice, gentle glass polish that is worth a try.
Eucalyptus oil gets just about anything off of anything and is also
worth a go.
In either case, just use a clean, lint free cloth to do the job.
Or check your insurance policy - some policies give you a free
windscreen change once a year...
And don't forget to change your windscreen wiper - and not just the
refill - do the entire blade assembly.
Cheers,
Steve

In which case, especially check the fine print! :)
Mine certainly covers windscreens, and I average around 1 replacement
windscreen in 3 years (per vehicle). I'm yet to claim one against
insurance.
I've even forgotten what the catch is, apart from being charged less
for the windscreen, but it's almost certainly to do with no claims
bonuses or driver ratings (I've got full no claims and a AAA rating).
IIRC the rating also carries additional benefits.
>And don't forget to change your windscreen wiper - and not just the

Why?
(Replacement aftermarket wipers are invariably vastly inferior to
original equipment... and more expensive than refills.)

Because the wiper blade assembly only has a good life of 5-10 years,
really. After a while, the rivets holding the blade together come
loose, and the rubber edge isn't held "square" to the windscreen - the
blade flops over and drags. Often this will cause juddering and
smearing, even with new refills put in. Changing to a new, good
quality blade will fix that right up. And you're right, a lot of
aftermarket gear isn't as good as the OE stuf, but Trico (for example)
supplies OE, and their aftermarket gear is just as good.
Interestingly, in Europe, apparently, you can't even buy the refills -
you're forced to buy the blade assembly. Also interestingly, I still
sell 8mm refills, though no car has had 8mm blade assemblies fitted
since about 1992!
Cheers,
Steve

Oh goodie.. having an '85 and '90 models ourselves.
The '85 wiper blade assembly on the merc are as good as new. Simply replaced the
refill with a quality type. Cheap crappy refills will cause juddering
regardless of how good the assembly is. In fact that is what some tool put in
them before we got it and of course it passed rego.
f.ck this, I'm off to watch Torchwood!!
