the winner will be the TAB, end of story

If they shut down horse racing tomorrow, I wouldn't even notice.

Yes you would, there would be less wasted pages, multiple times a week, in
the daily newspapers. There would also be less pollution.

During the first oil crisis the anti car lobby in USA complained about the
Indy 500 and wasted oil. It was pointed out that firstly they used alcohol
and that if you added up all the different sports and their associated
support and spectator activities, then horse racing/baseball and others were
well ahead in the pollution stakes.

Other than that, I know how you feel. It's MELBOURNE cup day but the rest of
the country wants it off as well as still wanting their own state holidays.

The in-laws have owned several race horses, They think they are wonderful
and think it makes them "special" because they are owners in "The Sport of
Kings", it just makes them broke and they get to hang around a different
class of criminal IMHO. Some of the dodgiest people I have ever met were
introduced to me by the in-laws as some of their racing friends.
But its worse in the dish lickers, one of the Bro in laws had dogs for a
while and he soon learned that he was never going to have a winning dog
unless he climbed into bed with some real low life's, at least he was smart
enough to get out before the corruption overwhelmed him. This was back in
the early 90's and I believe that its been cleanup up a bit since then.

People I've known who are in to betting on them were always very quick to
brag about their winnings but were rather silent most of the time about how
much they were losing.

I worked with a few blokes who liked the ponies and a bet, one even bragged
to me one day how he always won more than he lost, I asked him why he was
driving trucks instead of becoming a professional punter if that was the
case, like your friends he was very silent on the matter.

They say they love their horses, but if you had any doubt about how cruel
long-distance races are,..take a look in the stalls after the race. Many
horses are distressed and miserable after being thrashed for 2 miles,...love
them indeed.

ACT has "Family and Community Day", which just *happens* to be the same
day as Melbourne Cup every year. The name couldn't be more contradictory.

I can't think of a more blatant bullshit excuse to take Melbourne Cup
day off :)
