Athol - 17 Nov 2009 03:44 GMT For those who might be interested, I just had a phone call from Patrick's father to inform me that Patrick passed away on 5th November and was buried next to his mother in Warwick QLD on 10th November.

There is an overwhelming sadness when a father and/or mother grieves for a son/daughters demise. It happened to a close family member and he has been tormented by it for a few decades now.
If you have contact with Patricks father in the near future, pass on our sincerest condolences please.

People are rarely institutionalised these days and yet people with mental health issues cannot be relied on to self medicate because of the nature of their illness. Most may be quite harmless to others but there are some real crackpots out there too.

Even if Patrick was an alcoholic, he could have taken antidepressants with no interaction problems, provided he took them before bed. More than once I mentioned this to him,...but he was not interested. He didnt think much of doctors apparently, either.

f.cking oath you should have, but then you're as weak as piss like every other attention seeking fuckwit who continually talks about topping himself. You have absolutely no intention of ever doing it. You just want people to shower you with love and cry "Oh no Patrick. Don't do it. We love you". Well, I'll give you the mail on that one for free pal. Most people around here probably couldn't give a flying f.ck about you or what you do, as you've done *nothing* other than make a complete f.cking pest of yourself that the majority would be delighted to see the back of.

Get over yourself you mouth breathing retard. Everyone knew I didn't care for Pat, including Patrick himself, and he never had any particular love for me either. Whatever his problems were the amount of sh.t he copped from me was miniscule compared to crap he brought on himself in other groups. *He* was the cause of most of his issues as far as I could tell.

Same goes for pistons that have excessive clearance. Put piston in lathe, do a knurl on the top land,...exit piston slap.

The valve stem was eaten into above the guide area. I am looking at beefing it up to give it a bit of strength. If "metal cement" doesn't work I might braze the area or even run some weld up it.
It's called experimenting. Thanks for the advice that could come in handy one day.

For all the time and money it'll cost you to f.ck around with the thing, you could more than likely find a modern replacement that'll be cheaper and easier, and *not* fail with the potential to do damage to other components.

If such a > device exists, it'd cut down the time. Knurling valve guides used to be faily common. It was a quick and cheap option to replacing the guide or fitting a K-liner, but it was only ever a very short lived patch up thing. Used to do a lot of it for used car yards and other types who wanted a cheap temporary fix for something they didn't plan on having around for a long time.
> Same goes for pistons that have excessive clearance. Put piston in lathe, > do a knurl on the top land,...exit piston slap. Pistons are usually knurled on the skirt rather than the ring lands, and because the skirts are generally oval shaped rather than round you need a specialised machine that can accurately follow the contour of the skirt to perform the knurl correctly.
When I worked for Repco we had a dedicated piston knurling machine that was very old, and probably dated from the 1940's or so where the demand for piston knurling was pretty common. As far as I knew the machine still worked, but I never saw it used and it was the only machine in the shop that I had no idea about how to operate. I imagine it was fairly simple but the demand for piston knurling was non existent in the 1980's and it just never got used.
The machine spent most of it's time with a fabricated shelf over the top of it that we used as a bench to rest pistons on when we used the lathe next to it to machine the inside of the pin boss for rod fitting.

Knurling valve guides is butchery of the first order.
On the other hand, K-line inserts which cost bugger all more are a far better idea.

Knurling tools do exist but K-liners (bronze inserts) are so cheap and easy to install I can't imagine anyone bothering to knurl valve guides nowadays. Nor will knurling prevent oil getting past the guides (which is the main problem with worn ones).
>Same goes for pistons that have excessive clearance. Put piston in lathe, do >a knurl on the top land,...exit piston slap. Knurling the top land would almost certainly make piston slap far worse!... I'm basing that on the fact the associated noise can be reduced (or eliminated) from a lot of engines by _increasing_ the top land clearance (ie machining the top lands).
Knurl sizing pistons is an ancient method of decreasing _skirt_ clearance. It was superceded by micro-peening back in1950's or thereabouts. Both methods were at best a very short term cure for piston slap.

We had an HQ wagon manual with the 161 or 173 red motor. This car did some very high miles. It was calculated it had well over 300,000ks on it. It was in the shop quite often with low compression and piston-slap. The head mechanic deemed that no further money be spent on it,..a bit of politics going on. By comparison, we had an XT P/van which we drove fast all the time, yet its motor a 200cube 6, still hadnt ever had the head off. Anyway the 2IC mechanic pulled the slugs, found they were over 13 thou bore clearance. He knurled the slugs, fitted rings and it was deemed to not go over 90kph. It lasted about 2 months and this time it was parked in the shed. Some say bad fuel was run thru it to gain some extra driving with the speedo disconnected. From memory he did knurl the skirts,..I thought he did the top land too,..probably wrong there.

Put piston in lathe, >>do [quoted text clipped - 4 lines] > reduced (or eliminated) from a lot of engines by _increasing_ the top > land clearance (ie machining the top lands). So the slappy slug doesnt hit the bore cause its reduced in dia? Wuldnt that cause more blow-by and top ring overheat?

Both methods were at best a very short term cure for > piston slap. I found that new rings would stop slap for a couple of days due the increased lateral support, especially if a chrome shim-ring was fitted to reduce ring-groove wear. High mileageHemis used to sound like a bucket of bolts at idle. I had a temporary Hemi in service once (while the other donk was repaired). It had bad BBy. I came off the end of the F4 with a lung down. White smoke out the breather, which I had to direct to atmosphere, otherwise you couldnt start it hot. That piston had overheated from BBy and brken the rings which were stuck in their grooves.

Piston slap typically manifests itself at something less than 4 thou clearance. I'd suspect there might've been some confusion between skirt clearance and bore taper :)
> He >knurled the slugs, fitted rings and it was deemed to not go over 90kph. It >lasted about 2 months and this time it was parked in the shed. Some say bad >fuel was run thru it to gain some extra driving with the speedo >disconnected. From memory he did knurl the skirts,..I thought he did the top >land too,..probably wrong there. Excessive skirt clearance will often cause contact between the top land and the bore (due to the rocking motion of the piston as it goes through TDC and BDC). Back in the days when I was prepared to stuff around with buggered engines I often machined a couple of thou (diameter) off the lands to eliminate bore contact, otherwise there'd be absolutely no reason to touch the lands. I've never resized piston skirts by either knurling or micro-peening, having long regarded both as something only a used car yard might resort to.
>>>Same goes for pistons that have excessive clearance. Put piston in lathe, >>>do [quoted text clipped - 7 lines] >So the slappy slug doesnt hit the bore cause its reduced in dia? Wuldnt that >cause more blow-by and top ring overheat? It certainly won't cause blow-by, but it's never a good thing to expose more of the top ring to the flame front than absolutely necessary. Biggest offender in that regard is a ridge cutter... which should never be used on any engine that's going back into service without reboring IMHO.

Ex Govco VJ ute I once owned rattled something awful when I first bought it but was completely cured by the modified timing cover Chrysler sold for the purpose. It eventually got rings and bearings (and a head overhaul) at around 250k when it started to burn oil. The original pistons went back into bores which had around 15 thou wear (taper) immediately below the ridge and they certainly didn't rattle. Last I saw of it, it'd probably done at least another 50k and was blowing a bit of smoke but still sounded fine.

Worn rings and/or excessive piston to bore clearance cause slap. A cracked/worn/scuffed skirt will slap like mad.. ask Athol when he's in a skirt in the wind. There is no way you could stop a piston rocking in the bore by knurling the top ring land because all below would still flap about. I'm sure others in the group will connect me if I'm wiring.

Apart from which, insufficient top land clearance will cause the associated compression ring to seize in its groove (rapidly). Knurling the lands would almost certainly have the same effect.
Text book theory says that a compression ring relies on the full pressure of combustion acting on both the top and inside faces of the ring to achieve effective sealing. The top land clearance provides the essential connection.
Pretty sure the 'ACL Engine Manual' also mentions that top land contact increases piston slap. Presumably because bore contact on both sides of the gudgeon exacerbates the rocking action (ie they rattle around more than they otherwise would).

At work once a guy brought his Escort 1300cc which had blown a head-gasket. When we took off the head, all of the pistons had suffered swaging on the thrust-side upper land, there was a raised portion of alluminium due the piston whacking away. Now, I wonder if the ignition was too far advanced? This car sounded like a diesel. Also, one could see the top ring the piston was so damaged.

The top land clearance provides > the essential connection. It does, and it's one of the reasons why we used to drill "gas ports" in the tops of some race engine pistons to help with ring seal.
Basically it involved drilling a series of fine holes around the periphery of a piston crown in line with the back wall of the top ring groove, with the idea being that compression pressure goes down the hole and pushes on the inside edge of the ring forcing it against the wall. A totally useless mod on any street engine as carbon would seal the holes in ten minutes, but on some race engines it helped keep the rings in good shape and particularly in high boost supercharged applications where ring flutter was a major problem.

Strange how you got on the wrong track (yeah, sure). I went back and read the thread, just to re-assure myself that I wasn't ready for the funny farm (go for it) and you know what? It's quite clear what the *mistake* referred to.
It's Sunday and my engines are calling.

FERAL I UNDERSTAND YOU WERE DISCUSSING THAT I HAVE READ THAT PART OF THE THREAD - fair enough that was the 'mistake' you are referring to BUT I responded to a comment you made which was
" Do you have a plan and how many do you think you can muster?
which seemed to be (irrespective of the issue of the nature of the mistake, as I had moved on and was discussing the idea of a shitlist more broadly and taking out motherf..kers with me if I was to end it all (spoken about purely as an abstract of course) referring to my (hypothetical) exit plan. For the f.cking life of me I can't see how your question
>> Do you have a plan and how many do you think you can muster? was about anything else but that and if you look at this tangent of the thread you'll note I asked as much previously.
So then I responded in jest about K.Rudd etc and you posted.
> >> You've got your threads crossed. This has naught to do with > >> Pat FFS. Well maybe your valves vs noddy thing didn't but my responses certainly did, and the way you snipped/included quotesm it re-inforced that. Had you have made the 'threads crossed' comment about two paragraphs of qouted text higher, it might have made sense, but as you posted it, it seemed you had 'moved past' the issue of the valves, and had decided to comment again about the more on topic tangent of exit plans.
If that is not the case could you please (and I've asked this before) explain the relevance to the valve/seat reclamation tangent that the query (to me especially)
>> Do you have a plan and how many do you think you can muster? has.
> As for one of your earlier comments about putting up a mirror > to myself....well.... The key difference might be that I make no secret of the fact I'm arrogant and opinionated. Nor do I make any apology. It still doesn't mean than arrogant and opinionated wasn't more helpful that handwringing and pitiful. We shall have to agree to disagree on that.

Big fucken deal the mistake, did you ever consider the posts turn up in almost random order on my server? Still appeared, on re-read, that you had moved on and were commenting on my tangent in any case.
And more to the point, even if the 'mistake' you referred to was the off topic you vs noddster issue, whats the problem with discussing the tangent I took it on? Is there something you don't with to tackle on that?
We can agree to disagree on those last few points I raised too it doesn't bother me in the slightest.

The puffing up is probably just an anal restriction caused by the catalytic converter his EPA (ex-EPA now IIRC) missus shoved up his arse to save the planet from toxic emissions.
But even you must admit he can come up with useful information and advice. I've often encountered people who will not take advice from experienced mechanics, as if doing so would chop off their manhood. They generally fark eveything they touch, but sometimes despite their best efforts to fark things, something works... but not very well. Weekend warriors is one term we had for them. The monday morning call out to fix a vehicle someone has farked about with was not uncommon.

You know the other day when you said you give people a serve if you think they deserve it? Well, guess what Cinderella, you're not the *only* person in the world to have thought along those lines. I generally do unto others as they do unto me, and as far as Patrick was concerned he went out of his way to be a f.cking great pain in the arse and got dealt with accordingly.
Could I have ignored him and said nothing? Of course I could, but then if everyone just simply ignored the stuff they didn't like there's be around a dozen threads a year at the most. The way I responded to Patrick (or anyone else) is no different to the way I would (and do) in person. If this newsgroup was the public bar at some pub, I'd be no different.

The fathger of the bloke I was with at the time, has had a long running joke with me - started on an engine we were tweaking for a mutual friend, and running out of rags, we ended up using a pair of his old undies for a rag. Since then, any time a motor has had a quick coat of paint, you'd find the other person's old undies stuffed in the ports in the head, or a bottle of plonk he got for christmas was once giftwrapped in a pair..

Just so we understand each other, Pat's biggest issue was *Pat*, and anything I had to say to him was between him and myself. I'm a firm believer in telling it like it is, and in his case he well and truly asked to be told on a number of occasions. If he was looking for an outpouring of emotions then he certainly wasn;t going to get it from me.

This is version three of my response. In the previous two "drafts" I went into excruciating detail why I don't like Geoff Gordon (and to be fair he probably wouldn't have anything pleasant to say about me either).
Then I thought, f.ck it was all nearly 30 years ago, half the people involved are Dead or scattered to the four corners of the planet, Fidonet is dead, and things that may have seemed really important then have long passed into irrelevant history.
As I get older "live and let be" gets more and more attractive.

After I passed 3:640/702 to Grammar I ran a private node for some time after, but I didn't want the expense of a 2nd telephone line anymore.
I bought a nasty fax switch and re-programmed it so that instead of defaulting to "voice" it defaulted to "fax" which meant that an incoming "silent" modem call would get a modem, and my friends rapidly learned to say something after the fax switch answered the line in order to get phone.
Finn bought it off me when I had no further use for it and decided to blow new factory firmware into it - which of course returned the thing to "standard" behaviour. He never could get his head around the fact that it no longer worked the way he wanted it too because he f.cked with it.

Anyone that has a (even slight) neural malfunction *is* less fortunate than mainstream folk.
Jonz has posted about his "black dog", and that automaticaly clicks me into a forgiving, benevolent, understanding, temperance mode. I did it with family, I did it with Pat, and I'm gunna do it with Jonz. I'm not gunna put sh.t on him, he must have enough to carry already
It's just me I guess, and I don't care what Nod and the tribe think.

This is the second person that I know through online activities that has had a mental illness and has (likely) topped themselves this year. The other was an online friend which admittedly Patrick wasn't but still... Mental illness with symptomatic depression must be horrible to have to live and try to deal with.
Noddy - 17 Nov 2009 23:24 GMT > Mental illness with symptomatic depression must be horrible to have to > live and try to deal with. To be honest, and I may be wrong but anyway, I thought Patrick's "mental illness" was total bullshit and just a game he liked to play. I suspect his real problem was booze, and that he was a severe alcoholic.
I have no idea how he died, and I really don't care to be frank, but I think all this split personality stuff he was going on with in the last few months was nothing but total crap.

I suspect his > real problem was booze, and that he was a severe alcoholic. I don't know to what extent the multiple personalities were real, but the depression certainly was. He tended to get quite suicidal for a few weeks leading up to his birthday every year since 1996, when he turned 40. He really didn't want to grow old.
He posted a bit here and there about his alcoholism. Most regulars would recall that he spent some time in hospital in Sydney several months ago. That was largely due to his drinking while eating very little for several months. By the time he got out of hospital, his liver and kidneys were irreparably damaged and he knew it.
He also posted here about his earlier experimentation with pot, which he thought had increased his tendancy towards drinking.
In spite of a stint in a rehab clinic and counselling, in the end he just couldn't beat his addiction to alcohol. He drank a whole bottle of Vodka and ended up in hospital on life support. I really feel sorry for his father, who had to make the decision to turn off the life support. Even though the doctors clearly knew that it was the right thing to do, it would have been heartbreaking.
Patrick's mother died when he was a child, and he was an only child, so I can't even imagine how alone his father must be feeling right now.
It came as a shock to find out that he had left his Hilux and motorbike to me in his will. I thought that he was joking when he said that he was going to do that. It was because it that that his father rang me and told me of his passing.

For practicality reasons, his father will sell them and send the money to me. I'm directly involved in charitable activities that includes helping people with suicidal depression amongst other things, and will more likely than not put the money into that over time in addition to my own money that I already put in. Patrick knew about what I've been involved in and that I had lived through suicidal depression myself, and I'm pretty sure that he'd be happy with how I will use that money.

Nice work Athol, got a lot of time for people that help unfortunate others, NOT just by throw money at it, as in donations, but in many different ways.
Dont let the scum accountants of these donation recieving joints handle it either, make sure every cent goes to a just cause, say NO to admin. fees.
Keep up the good work!

When I said directly involved, I didn't mean working for a registered charity but *directly* involved in helping socially marginalised people to improve their quality of life. There are no middlemen involved, no accountants, etc.. Money comes out of my pocket and the pockets of others involved and goes directly to helping people.

I'm not normally depressed at all but tonight both the missus and I (yes both the missus, feral) feel a little saddened by his passing although I don't think he could have been helped by any of us or anyone for that matter.
On a lighter note, he could have given that bottle of vodka to me to drink and we'd all have the presence of his company. The last bottle of vodka I drank I said to the missus this is a bit pissweak, they must be watering it down. She said you are probably immune to it. Sleep well forever Dawggie.

And chronic alcohol abuse can and will do strange things to people over a prolonged period, especially if there's a predisposition to mental health problems.
I lost contact with Patrick (aside from reading the odd post here) quite a while ago, when he was still fairly 'normal' (if such a thing exists, albeit depressed) and working for UNSW. Evidently the life changes and moving to Q didn't help and he continued to decline, his demons winning in the end.
I wouldn't wish that sh.t on *anybody*.

I know that he was an alcoholic and I also know that abuse of alcohol can cause brain damage, I've seen it on more than one occasion so it is possible that his drinking problem caused his mental illness, its also possible that his mental illness caused his drinking. I can remember him from when I first found aus.cars and he was very different back then so its a sad day.

I don't argue, I discuss. Thanks for sharing the news Athol. I've been on-and-off with aus.cars for a few months so I didn't notice his sudden absence.
As others have said, and being a parent myself, I do feel deeply for his dad. As for Pat himself I know he simply got what he wanted - out. It's unfortunate that he did suffer from depression, sure, but I don't think there's any real cure for that other than what can come from within. In this case it wasn't to be.
He helped me a lot with my own Hilux and was a very generous person (the entire exhaust system and ute 'door' currently on my Hilux was a gift from him), as long as he didn't consider you to be part of the cancer of earth :)
I've read this whole thread and I can appreciate the comments both caring and harsh-reality (except for that fuckwit know-all 'jonz'), but if you met Patrick in real life he really wasn't some weird annoying freak. I think aus.cars and whatever other newsgroups were just his escape. Which, at times, was f.cking annoying for the rest of us :)
RIP Pat.

Hopefully, this will show up *eventually*. I gave up trying to post a few days ago 'cos everything from here seems to queued up behind a few 'failure to connects' and locked out. At least I can still read updates from others this time, unlike when it happened a couple of years ago.

A few moments ago, in another post, you said this:
" that so, ah..den..daril whatever...a trip to google *may* refresh yer memory....if i give someone a serve....it`s because *i think they deserve it*.....free speech, after all......is what Usenet is all about..."
Presumably, somewhere in this illiterate garbage you're expressing the belief that it's okay to speak your mind, and to pay out on someone if you think they *deserve* it. Yet, here in this post you appear to be having a go at Daryl for *nothing* other than him replying to Athol's original comment about Pat's death where he offered his condolences.
Now, I don't know about anyone else but I find this to be incredibly strange behaviour, and I'm wondering if you'd be so kind as to tell me what is was in Daryl's post that made you think he deserved a "serve"?
