Interesting article.  Funny how the Holden Cruze got one star and you still
see heaps of them on the road.  You could put a holden badge on a turd and
people would buy it.

My brother in law wants one and I am trying to talk him out of it.  I saw a
couple parked together in my local shopping center on Saturday and thought
it was odd that 2 people would buy 'em.

They did sell some of the above.  Which is pretty amazing.

Good for the kitty, ordinary for the cat
By Bill McKinnon
The Sydney Morning Herald
Thursday September 12 2002

Jaguar's affordable front-drive rival for four-cylinder Benzes and BMWs
takes the badge into run-of-the-mill territory.
Good: Lowers the brand's entry price by about $15,000. 2.1 V6 is refined
and, at the top end, pretty willing. Smooth-shifting automatic. Rigid
body. Respectable front-drive dynamics. Grip. Strong brakes. Excellent
suppression of noise, vibration and harshness.

Bad: Lacking pulling power in the bottom half of the range, V6 can
struggle with the car's weight, making it thirsty and causing the auto to
"hunt". Uninspiring handling compared with rear- and all-wheel-drive
Jags. Lumpy ride. Evidence of cost cutting. Unsupportive seats. Lacks
left footrest, cruise control and extendable boot.

Verdict: Meow.

Stars: 2.5 stars (out of 5).

Quality and control
Monday 8 November 1999

FOR: One of the more involving luxury cars. Strong, smooth engine, good
manual gearbox and great handling. Feels like a Jag inside. Excellent
ride comfort on all surfaces.
AGAINST: Still not the most space-efficient interior. Dull, spongy brakes
on test car. Overassisted, uncommunicative steering. Uncomfortable
driver's seat. No dead pedal.

VERDICT: Jaguars used to be driver's cars. The S-Type Sport, in style and
substance, is a welcome reprise.

RATING: 3 stars (out of 5)

Sabre-toothed special
By Bill McKinnon
The Sydney Morning Herald
Friday July 5 2002

Fasten your seatbelts and feel the G-force; Jaguar's new S-Type R is no
pussycat.
Good: Supercharged V8 has more power and torque than you will ever
require. Class-leading acceleration. Adaptive ZF six-speed auto suits it
well. Pace-with-grace dynamics. Tactile steering. Stunning brakes.
Reasonable ride. Comfortable, supportive driver's seat. Grip. Price.
Equipment. Style.

Bad: Body is still not 100 percent rigid. Can get a little floaty and
unsettled on undulating roads. Big hits reach cabin. Tightish back seat.
Small boot. Restricted vision.

Verdict: Feral cat.

Stars: 4.5 stars (out of 5).

Now in aluminium, a cat that can
By Bill McKinnon
The Sydney Morning Herald
Friday September 5 2003

Lighter and stronger in body but as sumptuous as ever inside, Jaguar's
XJ8 is as modern as its German rivals.
Good: Low-fat, high-muscle aluminium body delivers benefits in many
areas. Rapid, refined V8 performance with good fuel economy. Agile,
responsive handling. Compliant ride. Opulent cabin. Great seats. More
space, especially in the back. Well equipped.

Bad: Driver does not feel closely connected with the road. Front
suspension slightly underdamped, and loses some compliance on rough
corners. Overassisted steering. Average headlights. Sequential auto would
be nice. Shallow boot. Expensive options.

Verdict: Stiffened cat.

Stars: 4 stars (out of 5).

And guess what ?
That still doesn't alter the fact that two of the Drive testers went
home on trucks!

Yes.  Good to see an unhealthy obsession with Pomgolia is still -
after all these years - top of your agenda.  You know how the British
newsgroups and media in general are constantly talking about
Australian cars and how they compare?  Oh wait, they're not.
