Best car ever?

Went and borrowed my father in laws Hyundai Excel while he is in Iraq for
work.  The thing hadn't been started for 12 weeks so I thought I better
bring the jumper cables.  Got in it and it started first turn of the key as
if it had only been driven that morning.

I knew it had only had one service in it's entire 9 year life.  It had
185,000ks on it.  Besides a noisy wheel bearing and some tappet noise the
thing runs like a new one.

I stopped at Repco for an oil filter, air filter, spark plugs and 5 litres
of oil so I could give it a service.  Total bill $44.95.    Put $20 of fuel
in it so I could run around for the week and got 3/4 of a tank.  Drove from
Mandurah to Perth (75 ks) and the needle hardly moved.

Sure the thing is no performance car but it is pretty inoffensive to drive.
But god it can cop abuse and runs on the smell of an oily rag.

Best car ever?

Dunno about that, but bait taken nonetheless.
Check the equivalent Loser/Mudza models cf the Hyundai for condition.
There be a truth there:-0.

Besides, they did fit camber adjusters to the front suspensions and
*standard* (ie didn't delete them like most others) rear foggies - which
goes a long way towards proving that they did give a tad more than a rats
arse about their customers - even if they did miss a few million welds and
not put the correct stickers on the silly bloody jacks.

Lucky you got a bearing noise, only noise a guy at works made was the
scraping of axle steel on road when it fell apart.

My wife had one and it was pretty good value. Sure it was simple, a bit
noisy and it steered like a boat, but for a cheap-arse runabout the thing
never missed a beat and had reasonable hoon value.

my excel has been good to me and my hip pocket for the past 5 yrs ..

i wouldn't go as far as to say it is "the best car ever" but given what it
has cost me to run the car after nearly 250,000kms ... it has been good ..

now .. if only i can get enuff $$ together for a turbo, an intercooler and
some exhaust work .. and some mechanical work .. and lots of dim sims ...
i'll be a very happy vegemite :)

ps .. bloody hell.. nearly forgot the stickers to make the car look faster
:)

Like most cars made in the last 10 yrs they are relatively reliable but
when I look at the way they are engineered and screwed together I have
try and stop myself throwing up.
IMO they are very cheap and nasty and anyone with half a clue about cars
wouldn't touch one or inflict one on someone they know.
Only positive thing I will say is an early Excel is the easiest car I've
fitted a cruise control too, fitting the same model cc to the same
owners Camry took twice as long.

I reckon it will start breaking down now that you taken out the good oil. :)

Apparently less than 10% of accidents are caused by drivers exceeding the speed
limit.

Chris - 28 Apr 2004 00:09 GMT
haha i was about to say the same thing ;)
same thing happened to a mate in his XF. hasnt done a service since he got
it, n hes done just on 100,000ks in it, never missing a beat!
decides its *finally* time to do a service on it, n the very next day, it
breaks down
haha

I was thinking that.  The oil that came out was really black and thick.
Most of it had baked onto the dipstick.  At least the head is no longer
making terminal noises.  Just needs a wheel bearing but I couldn't be arsed.

I dunno what the single-cam Hyundais are like but the twin-cam ones don't
like going much past 90,000 without a new cam-belt.
You'll have to put TWO in!

one.
there's a chain at the rear of the head linking the camshafts
together, still a good idea to change it though.
still only normal scheduled maintenance for any car though.

Erm..  it was a joke Joyce!  (they need replacing at 90,000 and he's done
185,000 so he needs two....)

Yeah.... If the maintenance is being done!  (Read the first message again).

Maybe it had it's service at 90,000 and was done then. hardly likely
though and certainly a time bomb i wouldn't want to be driving.

It has had a timing belt.  Amazingly.  It is probably due for the next one.

Best car ever built (IMO and many others in the know) is the 70's 450SE/L*

A high point for Benz of which they are still to reach again

Talk about lasting and strength, this is the one

*Excl. the complicated and thirsty 6.9 V8

You once again show that you have no clue.
http://www.uniquecarsandparts.com.au/car_info/mercedes_benz_450SEL.html
" First offered in 1975, it shared the grand 600s 6.3 litre V8 but had
it bored out to 417ci/6.835Ltrs to produce an appreciable 286hp and
highway pounding 550Nm of torque.

It was and remains the biggest postwar engine mercedes ever made.  A
0-100 figure in the low 7s made it the quickest luxury 4 door in the
world at the time, but it was its freeway abilities past 100kmh which
really impressed and left all in its wake. "

The 300SEL 6.3V8efi is in fact the Falcon GTHO beater,be that as it may,
that was the model that really made the world sit up and take notice of
Benz, and was the end of RollyRoyce being called BestInTheWorld [Which they
still continued to do]

I was refering to the next model, the 450SE/L, this is a landmark vehicle for
them and rightly named world-car-of-the-year,very safe,very fast,very
strong,very high quailty,very lasting, a bulletproof Benz

I know the service manager at a Benz dealership here in Vic.,he confirms it
is a bullet-proof vehicle needing very little done to keep running in tip
top condition, also not uncommon for them to have 100,000'sMILEs and still
not even showing any signs of wear, best Benz ever built is his words
I also know a panel-beater and he claims the metal is so tough it needs
heaps of heat on it work it and very well designed and built

The Benz owners club also have a big rap for that edition

The 6.9 was too complex ,and all the V8s go through fuel at a alarming rate

They should still be building them today, prob. still safer than a Falcodore

One of my all time fav. vehicles
