Haven't travelled that personally, but have used that map maker quite a bit
and it is generally very good.

Try plugging in some routes that you travel every now and then, I usually
finds that its takes the same way as I would.

Good luck!

Yep, that'd beat going through Sydney, *any* day.  Actually, I'd recommend
going via WA as well.

The easiest way would be to follow the "North Coast" signs off the M5 at
Crossroads and take the Cumberland Highway and Pennant Hills Road (Metroad
7).  Lots of traffic lights and in normal traffic conditions will take
around 50 minutes to an hour from motorway to motorway.

An alternative with tolls is to stay on the M5 and Eastern Distributor and
Harbour Tunnel, coming off the motorways at the Pacific Highway in Chatswood
and follow the Pacific Highway up through the upper North Shore suburbs.
Will be longer in kms and cost around $7 in tolls but may be quicker in
light to medium traffic conditions.

Staying with the tolls - Why not go under the Pacific Highway, and go that
last toll?
Far easier for a newbie to that than piss about on the Pac track.

I have some friends who take the tollway all the way into the city, then
head north, but I prefer to get off the freeway at Liverpool, and head north
there.
Just follow the signs.  You can take a bit of a shortcut up North Rocks
Road, but you have to know where you're going.

Take the Cumberland/Hume Hwy exit from the Hume Fwy.  Clearly marked as
route <7> IIRC.  Approx 33deg58.524 S, 150deg52.232' E.

The Cumberland Hwy turns left from the left lane only at 33deg54.911' S,
150deg55.244' E.  Follow the signs...

When you get to the M4 (the signs give distance to M4 junction), turn
right onto the M4.  33deg48.976' S, 150deg57.794' E.

Take the James Ruse exit, which is after the Parramatta exit but before
the toll gates.  Only lets you go north, which is what you want.  Note
that the left lane ends just after the Parramatta exit, so don't get
into that lane.  :-)  33deg49.820' S, 151deg01.143 E.

There is a clearly marked fixed camera on James Ruse.

Take the Pennant Hills Rd exit from James Ruse.  33deg47.764' S,
151deg00.847' E.  Turn right onto Pennant Hills Rd.

There is a clearly marked fixed camera on Pennant Hills Rd.
33deg46.960' S, 151deg02.915' E.

Turn right onto end of F3.  33deg43.214' S, 151deg06.361' E.

There is a clearly marked fixed camera on the F3.  33deg21.498' S,
151deg20.574' E

Ahhh, Athol has *Technology* (tm).

AGD66 or WGS84?

The difference is about 200 metres after all!

WGS84.

The other interesting thing is that a lot of people seem to be confused
or worried by the GPS sitting up in the middle of the dashboard and the
right-lane blockers tend to move out of the way more often?!?  It's
particularly noticable at night when I have the backlight on and it
reflects off the windscreen and is visible to people ahead and behind
me.  :-)

> The difference is about 200 metres after all!

Given that all the points I mentined are well signposted, if an error
of 200m was a problem, they may as well stay home.  :-p

Maybe if I could find a remote aerial for the GPS that looked like a
radar pod...  Clamp it to the driver's side roof gutter above the
driver's side rear door.  :-)  I'd gain accuracy from the GPS too!

A bit of poly pipe painted black would serve just as well :-)

Another way is to go off the Freeway outsde of Liverpool onto the M5.
Stay on (pay toll $3.30) until the Bankstown exit, Fairford Ave. Turn
left. Follow this onto Stacey St, don't get off until you turn onto
Silverwater Rd. Follow this north, there are many sneaky shortcuts,
looking for Carlingford. At Carlingford turn onto Pennant Hills Rd in
the direction of Newcastle. Pennant Hills Rd then joins the F3 near
Hornsby (Wahroonga?) Head north,

Best thing to come out of Sydney - the northbound F3!!!!

Steve
stib - 29 Oct 2003 04:24 GMT
up from vic....

at the end of the hume freeway ( on metroad 5),
turn to cumberland hwy (met road 7) , go north and it will become
the F3 sydney newcastle freeway,

try to avoid driving on cumberland freeway on peak hour.

If your friend has no Sydney experience/knowledge, by far the easiest and
least stressful way would be to 'follow the freeways' - ie, M5, ED, cross
the harbour and up the Pacific Hwy and so on.  Cost you a bit, but after a
long drive they probably won't want to battle Sydney traffic.

January 1998.

Depart Adamstown Heights 04:15, arrive Crown Casino car park 12:55.

Getting through Sydney prior to 6am, and using the Cumberland Highway/
Pennant Hills Rd was the trick.

This, however, was pre-Eastern Distributor.

Avoiding peak traffic, suggest straight along the M5, past the airport, and
under the harbour on the Eastern Distributor.  Easier to navigate than the
M5/ Cumberland/ Pennant Hills combination for a newbie, and probably just as
quick.
