Guys

Just wondering if anyone here can tell me under what conditions the fan
infront of the A/C condenser is supposed to turn. Is it meant to come on
when the AC switches on, or only when the car reaches a certain temperature.
It never seems to turn on.

The AC works great when the car is moving but is a shocker when in traffic,
so i am thinking this fan is meant to be doing something.

Any ideas or wiring diagrams for me to check.

thanks

Its supposed to turn on with the A/C.

It's actually switched on by the medium pressure switch on the receiver/drier.

The fan only runs when the pressor switch turns it on eg when the gas
temp therefore pressor exceeds a preset level. Common mod to improve the
cooling when retrofitting for 134a is to connect the fan to the
compressor clutch through a relay to make it run with the compressor.

Must be different to the VK which switches the fan on as soon as the A/C
is turned on.

It's switched on by the medium pressure switch on the receiver/drier through
relay B.  Power fed from fuse #8 (batt) and control circuit fed via fuse #13
(acc) which also feeds the vent_fan_control/comp_clutch/FICD.

I've found a number of these dual pressure switches that have failed on the MP
contacts.  Quick test:  pull out the plastic grille, locate the switch assembly
on the receiver/drier.  With the ignition switch in the ACC position, bridge the
blue and black wires at the connector.  The aux fan should run.

If you have broadband I could email you a .jpg of the schematic.

Budgie,

thanks for the info. jpg of the schematic would be great.

Thanks Budgie.

The medium pressure switch has stopped working.

Looks like i will have to replace it or wire up the fan to switch on with
the compressor

Depends what you want.  Ideally a (road-)speed switch IMHO.  If you do the sums
on the air velocity through this fan you will fairly quickly realise that at or
above certain road speeds in the gear of your choice, the aux fan actually SLOWS
DOWN the airflow through the condenser/radiator that would otherwise occur from
the radiator fan alone.  The speed at which it effectively "free-wheels" when
powered is obviously the point where it should be tuned on/off.

However that's too hard, so most times I recommend you simply fit a dashboard
switch across the MP switch, just grounding the blue wire from relay B.  That
way you can have some extra air in traffic jams even when the a/c is off.

it is my understanding that from the factory, there is a relay attached to
the drier which operates the fan at a certain temp.  When my car was fitted
to accomodate the new gas, the auto electrician wired the fan to come on
whenever the compressor is turned on. At this time of year the fan should be
operating most of the time - especially once you've stopped moving forward.

I have the same problem, but I always thought it was due to a lazy
compressor.  If you are stopped, and give it some pedal (around 3000rpm)
this juices up the compressor a bit more and will probably help deliver
cooler air.  This may also be effective because the radiator fan will draw
more air through the condensor with increased revs.  Not a solution of
course.  Perhaps you need to regas the AC ?

Sounds like yoru low on gas and the low revs arent enough to get the gas
thats in there working. Had similar issue that was rectified with my toyota.
A little R22 extra and away I went ICE COLD!

I had the ac regassed about a month ago because it wasn't cold at all. I was
told that was all it needed, but they obviously didn't check the operation
of the fan when they regassed it. I think I might wire the fan to come on
with the compressor.

Thanks for your help

With R290 (Propane) at least, I notice that when it starts to run low
there is quite a loud hissing noise from the evaporator when the
compressor is running due to the bubbles in it.

Is there some bituminous gunk wrapped around the expansion valve - if
it's in with the evaporator, that is?
If not, next time it's all in bits......

Nup.

I've had one all in bits just a few hours ago that is now working fine.

I'll post another thread about it with a somewhat fuzzy picture. I suck
at taking photos especially as my right hand is currently stuffed, and
shakes a bit now too.
