1990 Coupe water under Spare wheel & Drivers Side

I'm looking at purchasing an Audi Coupe 1990, however a small amount
of water is getting into the sides of the boot. The rear light cluster
look like they have been removed and resealed with white silicone.

As the tailgate is still leaking is this something that should stop me
buying the car?
This is the second car I have seen with this problem, is it very
common?

Robert,
Fairly common - as the sealant around the taillights gets old, some water
can get in. The water will also rust the taillight fixtures - leading to
all sorts of electrical hijinks. The best solution is to go to an
Automotive Paint place and get a tube of Urethane sealant, remove the
taillights, clean the old sealant off and use the urethane. If the present
owner is using a Home Depot solution to the leak, maybe you should take a
closer look into the care of the car (ie - oil changes, engine compression,
what type of oil filter are they using, if there's a K&N air filter in....).
It might also have been in an accident, breaking the seal around the light
(or necessitating its replacement).
