You don't, they are adjusted when they are fitted new, if it has stretched &
become slack replace it,
Steve.

are you therefore saying, as it stretches the timing goes out. There must be
a way of resetting it while this happens.

You need to find out if your engine is what's called an interference
engine. If it is and you have been turning it over you will have bent
some valves probably. Best to find out before you mess with it anymore

Why didn't you replace the timing belt at the same time?!
have a look here
http://www.audiworld.com/tech/
There is an article on setting up and replacing a timing belt
on an Audi - it is not the same model as yours, but will give
an idea of what is involved in setting the timing properly.
Does Haynes not cover timing setup for your car?
Unfortunately, if your engine is an interference engine, you might
have caused quite a bit of damage internally already, but you
may be lucky!

Buy a manual, find the timing marks, line them up, refit the belt, pray
very hard nothing is broken.

Read the Haynes manual for that engine. It'll tell you how to set the
cam sporcket and the crankshaft in relation to each other to get it all
together.
