I have been using the Proline oil filters from Pep Boys for years in several
different cars. They appear to be of good quality. Some guy did a teardown
of various oil filters and published the results on his website. He
concluded Proline filters were quite good.
On my A4 (ATW engine), I took some advice that suggested pre-filling the
filter before installing it. This is actually good advice, as the filter
holds about a quart of oil.
I also read, recently, where someone suggested putting a plastic bag (such
as the ones you get at Pep Boys) around the filter before removing it. This
made a big difference in the amount of oil that leaks everywhere.

Just purchased the OEM filter at Princeton Audi for my upcoming 30k
mile change. Including tax, it was $9.01 (and they didn't charge me the
penny!).... Maybe you guys need to find a different dealer!!
