Hi
I have a 96 Audi A4 1.9 TDi on the 1z engine code.. this car has been very
reliable for me taking me all over the uk. When i bought the car a friend
said it sounded like there was a tooth missing on the fouth gear. I wasn't
that concerned as i did alot of motorway driving.

Recently a problem with selecting first gear arrose and it started crunching
into 3rd even when double clutched. and every so often 5th gear was not
available. I assume the gearbox is screwed. I have looked all over for a
replacement gearbox and t5hey all seem really expensive. Has anyone had any
of the above symptoms? And can anyone shine any light on what the possible
cause is and how to remedy without replacing the box. I was thinking about
breaking the vehicle as it is just sitting on my drive. but it seems a shame
to break it when it still has plenty of mileage left in it.

I doubt it's the gearbox, they are pretty bullet proof, i had a 96 A4
Quattro and I could not select a few gears one day, turned out to be a
problem with the selector, I had the clutch changed at the same time, and
they recon'd first gear as they said it was showing wear.

Hi

I have changed the clutch already and checked the selector all seems to be ok
nothing seems dry or loose. was the recon gear expensive to have the work
done?

It cost me approx £800 but it is a harder job, it was quattro so the gearbox
was harder to take out :)

That inc a new clutch and all the other bits, like oil etc
